I hate commercials,
so, we decided to
make a really cool one
...

After my healthcare provider CEO years, I joined a wonderful medical consultancy, filled with deeply-sensitive and creative people. And, one of our assignments was to help the public understand the true nature of the important role played by professional nurses.

Oddly, just as some people persist in referring to airline flight attendants as stewardesses and stewards, too many folks cling to the notion of nurses as glorified maids, servants on-duty to cater to our every menial whim while we are hospitalized.

In fact, today's nurse is a highly-educated professional, schooled in the operation of incredibly complex technology, required to keep unbelievably-voluminous records and files, and to have amazing stores of knowledge as to to how to administer drugs and...yes...how to save our lives in a moment of crisis.

Yet, the concept of nurse-as-maid persists.

So, here's the ad we created to help get our perceptions in sync with reality:

(There is no talk, no music, no sound effects during this entire [copyrighted] commercial, or, at least not until the last five seconds.)

  • The camera "watches" as a nurse stops by a room and adjusts an IV pump, smiling and giving reassurance to the patient within.
  • Then, she is shown at the drug cupboard, signing out a medication, carefully double-checking the orders.
  • Next, she responds to a code -- and we all know what a hair-raising event that is!
  • The code successfully completed, the camera next catches a glimpse of our nurse empathetically assuring a patient's family member that she'll make sure that "something special" will be done after dinner to help his mom celebrate her birthday, which is today....
  • Finally, the camera zooms in for a closeup as our nurse turns toward the lens for the first time. Smiling, she tells us, simply, "I'm a nurse. I touch their lives."

That's what you do. Go do it, with a renewed sense of purpose...and pride. You earn all of our respect every time you step out onto that unit!
