Old Jerusalem Baptist Church in Chipley

~ Old Family Church ~

This is all that's left of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Chipley after it burned down. Lee was a deacon of this church where his family attended services. If anyone knows when and how the church burned down, please email me at Tysgrl@aol.com. This photo was taken in 1978.

~ New Church ~

New Jerusalem Baptist Church was built after the old one burned down. Many descendants of Lee still worship here.

Martha Myrick-Johnson had a sister named Mary Liza. Oral family history says Mary Liza was the first black child born, in Washington County, after the Emancipation Proclamation. In 1960, the head of the housing authority decided to name a housing project after Mary Liza.

Martha Myrick-Johnson had a sister named Mary Liza. Oral family history says Mary Liza was the first black child born, in Washington County, after the Emancipation Proclamation. In 1960, the head of the housing authority decided to name a housing project after Mary Liza. Apparently she was well-loved by the community. I recently got permission from the Washington County News to place a copy of a newspaper article about Mary Liza on this web site. You can view it at the news articles site.
