This movie proved several theories. For starters, Sean Connery still has it. However "it" is defined - grace, elegance, a sex appeal, or the ability to make you believe in him.

Connery plays a retired thief who reluctantly teams with Zeta-Jones en route to a heist flashily timed on the eve of the new Millenium. The biggest of many stretches was the limpid passion between Zeta-Jones and Connery. Entrapment proved it's called chemistry for a reason.

Quite simply, Zeta-Jones is not Connery's special screen someone. She worked in Zorro, but didn't do her homework here. It takes a while to catch on that she was playing both ends against the middle. This was because the depth expected from a character working as an insurance investigator and sidelining as the subject thief of her own investigations was glaringly absent. It was also a stretch to believe this woman had nefarious connections in seedy Kuala Lumpur. Zeta-Jones' flat performance provided a pretty canvas, but with the same two-dimensional support.

That said, Entrapment had a meaty plot and stunning visuals (not least of which were the actors themselves). The stakes were high, but the director forgot to tell his leading lady.

Thumbs undecided!
