Chapter 8

Katalina opened the front door at eleven.
“ Dad?” she called. She had no answer. She went into the kitchen.
“ Dad?” she called again. Then she saw the note on the table.
	 Katy
Gloria’s in the emergency room. Will probably be there awhile. We’re
at West Baptist. Love you, Dad
Katalina ran back out to her car. Se drove ten miles over the speed
limit begging a cop not to pull her over. The little BMW finally pulled
into the parking lot. Gloria couldn’t die. She had been like a mother to
her. She had been there for as long as Katalina could remember. “ Katy!” her father called to her when she came in. “ How is she? What happened?” “ She fell down the stairs. She’s broken her arm in two places. She’ll
need to let it heal for at least six weeks. She’ll be going home for
that time. I’m waiting now to take her home.” “ Oh.” “ Katy where were you? I called Devra and you weren’t there.” “ I was at the club.” “ With whom?” “ No one. I was just trying to met new people.” Mr. Verret gave her a stern look. “ Mr. Verret, she’s ready to go,” a male doctor said helping Gloria
out. “ Gloria!” “ Miss Katalina,” she said in a soft voice as she hugged her. “ I am so sorry.” “ I’m glad to see you.” “ I came as soon as I knew.” They all went out to the Cadillac. “ Jeeves, to Miss Reever’s house. Please drive carefully.” “ Yes sir.” Katalina stripped leaving her clothes I the bathroom floor. She then
stepped into the steaming shower. It was twelve-thirty and she was
exhausted. She really needed to get to bed. But today had been too
much. After her shower, she headed for bed leaving her clothes in
the floor. She curled up in bed and fell asleep waiting for the next
day.
