Reasons why I'm obsessed matchbox20.
1. Whenever somebody mentions an upcoming concert, I pass out. [this is true! I fell over when I heard that they were performing on the '98 AMAs.]
2. I play the guitar, so I can annoy my sister, Nancy, by playing "Push" over and over again.
3. The best pics I ever drew were of matchbox20! I can draw Rob really well and Nancy can draw Brian good too!
4. My hair has never been long, so when I go to a matchbox20 concert, girls look at me and think I'm Rob Thomas! I guess, I shouldn't have worn that cowboy hat, huh?
5. I try to get every poster I can of theirs, but Nancy thinks that they're looking at her when she changes her clothes.
I'll come up with some more l8r.

Hey! I'm writing to tell you about the awesome Matchbox20 concert I went to. It was in Birmingham Alabama at the Oak Mountian Theatre. They were so awesome man. I can't believe how good they were. Most people don't sound good in person but Rob Thomas sounds the exact same. I hope they come back to Birmingham...I will be there definitely!!!

Hi, I'm Jake and I'm 9 years old. I went to my first concert in August 98. And I got to see matchbox 20. It wasn't as loud as I thought it would be. The security guards let me over the rail and I was really close to Rob and Kyle. (Sorry, I don't remember what they were wearing cuz I don't care about clothes) My favorite song they performed was Push. They also sang Rest Stop. It was a great concert and I will never forget it.

My friends father is a concert promoter. Last May he did a matchbox 20 concert, so for my b-day I got an all access backstage pass and tickets to the concert. Here's my story: After a long 2 and a half hour car ride (totally worth it, but you have no idea how difficult it was to sit still in a car when you know you're about to meet matchbox 20) we finally got to the Mid Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsi, NY around 5pm. We found a security guard to take us in and get us our passes and stuff. As soon as we opened the doors to the building I heard "Never Going Back Again." They were soundchecking! One of our goals was to get there in time to catch the soundcheck but we weren't
sure if we were going to make it so when I realized that we had, of course I screamed "I want to see the soundcheck!" We had to get our passes first, but in order to get to the offices where our passes were we had to walk right in front of the stage where they were. So we went into the auditorium, and there they were!! As soon as I saw them I
screamed OH MY GOD!!! Luckily they were playing and couldn't hear me. We got our passes and quickly went to watch the soundcheck. It was so cool! Aside from Rob's sister and a couple of roadies we were the only people there! It was like a private concert. I decided not to bother Rob's sister so didn't talk to her or anything. They played "Never Going Back Again" for about 20 minutes and then "Busted". I tried to
take pictures but it was kind of dark and I only had a crappy disposable camera so they didn't come out (d'oh). But while I was watching in awe and singing along Adam waved to us! However, me being the dork that I am stood there in complete and utter shock for a second before waving back. But he smiled so it was all good =). The whole band was kind of looking at us and probably wondering why we were there. It was kind of cool and kind of intimidating to have matchbox 20 staring at me. Mostly cool though. =)
After the soundcheck we went to "Meet and Greet" where the band meets contest winners and does publicity stuff, etc. This was when we talked to them for the first time, and got their autographs and stuff. All of the guys are so friendly! I was so nervous I could barely speak, but they talked to me and put me at ease. They all asked me if I was the girl at the soundcheck. It was so cool that they noticed me. I talked to Rob and got his autograph and stuff first. He is amazing to talk to. He really looks you in the eyes and makes you feel like really cares about talking to you. He signed my liner notes "Hi Melissa- U saw our secrets. Rob Thomas" (in reference to my being at the soundcheck). Then I moved on to Adam. He was hysterically funny and really easy to
talk to. He signed "Love ya Mel! ADAM". Then I talked to Paul who has got to be the funniest guy in the whole world. After talking about the soundcheck (he didn't think they sounded good -I had to tell him otherwise) he went to sign my liner notes when he saw what Adam wrote. He said "Aw man he called you Mel." I told him that I didn't mind at
all (Adam can call me what ever he wants to) and that I get called Mel sometimes and he said "No, it's just, he does this all the time. He makes up names for people even if they don't make any sense." Well, Adam overheard this and said "Well she doesn't mind. Do you?" Of course once again said I didn't mind at all, but the realization that
Paul and Adam were discussing me was almost enough to give me a stroke =) Paul signed "Melissa- Thanks for the confidence -Paul Doucette". Then we went and talked to Brian and Kyle. They were just awesome too. The whole band is honestly so nice. Each and everyone of them made an effort to talk to every fan there. You could tell that they really appreciate the fans and are genuinely good people. Brian signed "Melissa- I'm up here. B'bye. -Brian Yale" (because he signed the top of my liner notes) and Kyle wrote "Melissa -Peace on earth Kyle Cook" (umm...sure (= ). Just as "Meet and Greet" was ending Adam came back over to us (he came to us, how awesome is that?!!?) and thanked us for coming to see them and stuff (oh twist my arm -hehe) and shook my hand. Now as I am sure all of you know Adam is a lefty so he shook with his left hand, but I didn't realize it was his left hand until I had already extended my right hand so I had to switch hands in mid air (Adam can shake hands any darn way he wants to (= ). That day he was wearing silver glittery nail polish on just his thumb and pinky -of course.
Then we got to eat dinner with them. I was too nervous to eat anything so I just watched. The band had their own table and I didn't want to bother then while they were trying to eat their dinner, so we didn't really talk, but I have to admit was was starring a lot (come on ladies can you really blame me? -hehe)! Adam took the longest to finish
and he did and interview towards the end while he was eating a piece of chocolate cake. After dinner they went to the dressing rooms to get ready for the show (the one place they wouldn't let me go -darn (= ).
Rebeka (spelling?) opened for them. We had no desire whatsoever to see her so we hung out backstage. Paul saw us and said with a grin on his face "You guys are just everywhere." Very cool. After Rebeka we went out for the show. We were right up front between Adam and Rob (the guys were in their normal formation on the stage, except Brian of course who was all over doing "the Pookie shuffle" (= ).
The concert was the most AMAZING thing ever!!!! If you've never had the privilege of seeing them live, THEY ROCK!!!! And have the coolest opening I have ever seen! It is all dark and there is a black curtain in front of the stage and you see this slide show of "busted" things like car crashes and whatnot and you hear the background noise from "Busted", and then just as they hit the first guitar chord of the song the curtain lifts and the guys walk forward! It is really dramatic when you are in a crowd of thousands of screaming people! They played the whole cd plus "Mercy, Mercy Me", "Time After Time", "Tired", "You and I and I", "Happy", "Rest stop", and "Unkind". Kyle sang the chorus on "Hang" really well (I was very pleasantly surprised). I didn't hear a single mistake. They were perfect! They have so much energy! They really mean every note and every word to every song. They are so intense and passionate. You can't help but get really into it too. They have such amazing stage presence. Rob said the "Damn" and the "Back 2 Good" speeches and had everybody throw the goat. It was incredible!!!!!!!!
After the show we went backstage one more time to talk to them and have them sign a promotional picture my friend's dad gave me. You could tell they were tired and stuff, but they were still just as nice, funny and friendly (gotta love that southern hospitality (= )! Most of the guys just signed their names above their faces on the pic, but Rob wrote
"Melissa - Thanx for the love Rob Thomas" and Paul wrote "Melissa -Thanks a lot! Paul Doucette" (such sweethearts I tell ya). After saying good bye, thanking them so much for just being them and telling them how much they rocked we took off. It was the perfect day and the BEST birthday present I have ever gotten! Everything you have ever hear about them being nice, funny, REAL people is all completely true =)!
