~What's up with the band~

Happy late-Valentine's Day everyone!! Hope it was really brilliant. Also, on V-Day was Rob's birthday!! We all wish him a awesome one!!
-Everyone at the 'Zine

As you probably already know mb20 lost their Grammy.
It'll all be made up next year. ;)

The boys won Best New Artist for the Blockbuster Entertainment (Music) Awards. The award show won't be until March 10, and the winners have not yet been released to the public, so consider this some pretty damn cool inside info!
-libby0@hotmail.com

The March 1998 issue of Guitar World has "Push" transcribed for guitar(s).
-sheila_77@hotmail.com

There is a small tidbit about mb20-
March 1998 issue of YM - page 12 - "You asked for it"
You're all fired up about Matchbox 20. This hot quintet recently burned up the charts with "Push" and "Back 2 Good." (???) Frontman/Songwriter Rob Thomas fanned his flame for music while growing up in Orlando, FL, listening to mellow Van Morrison and the rockin' Rolling Stones. Blaze a trail to the band's way cool website at www.matchbox20.com.
-sent in by MagicPie65@aol.com

Last night at the Fayetteville concert, Rob said (on stage) that after they left Fayetteville that they were going to make the video for "Real World"!!!!!!!!
-mb20girl@iname.com

I was listening to the radio and they said that they had an interview with Rob and he said that they will not be coming out with a new CD until 1999 because he wrote the songs but he wants the other guys to add what they want to the songs and it probably won't be finished very soon.
-lysithea@admin.con2.com

In the latest issue of US (w/ Meg Ryan on the cover) there is one page on matchbox 20! Be sure to check it out.

You can see a *small* pic of the boys at the Grammys on the Official Grammy Page
. I believe it's the whole group, but it's not very big so I'm not positive. When you go to the picture page expect to go through like 5 pages before you get to the mb20 one. On the page it's the top middle one. Hard to find, but trust me it's there ;)
-Carrie6896@aol.com

This isn't official yet but, Matchbox 20 will be on MTV Live from the 10 Spot on 3/20 - Don't forget to watch! Another Rumor I've head is that Matchbox 20 will be playing at MTV's Spring Break.
-MagicPie65@aol.com

The guys are in the recent issue of Guitar Shop which is the collector's edition and they are in Hit Parader with Marilyn Manson on the cover. - PlumpGimp@aol.com

~Here is where you can get info on what Matchbox 20 is doing on the road~

March 11, 1998 in Milwaukee Wisconsin, at the Rave 7:00 PM!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
-rpeterson@toast.net and Wallbox20@aol.com

They're coming to Bethlehem, Pa on March 18, ((and I got 3rd row, dead center tickets....aghhhhhh!!!!!!)), so anyone going, e-mail me:

Well I have negative news. I was so psyched because the band was supposed to be coming to Peoria (where I live) on March 7th and the night before tickets were to go on sale, they canceled, something like route problems was the excuse. They really upset a lot of people by doing that, myself included. I love the guys and their music and have been hoping they would come to town ever since their CD first came out and they canceled, I must say it was a big disapointment.
-Jess
HoneybeeJD@aol.com

I just thought you'd like to know there's a Matchbox 20 and 3rd Eye Blind concert on March 16 (I think) in Washington, D.C. or somewhere near there. They keep talking about it on the radio.

I was reading the Billboard Magazine yesterday and just happened to notice that Matchbox20 was # 1 with "3am"on the adult contemporary!! Yahoo, and I think they were like # 5 on the Top 200 Singles.
-Angel856@aol.com

On February 8, "3am" beat out "Walkin' On The Sun" to claim the #1 spot in Casey's Hot 20.
"That was 'Walkin' On The Sun' by Smashmouth. And that means we're up to the brand new number one this week. It's by a band that was voted 'Best New Band' in a recent issue of Rolling Stone. Every year, Rolling Stone Magazine puts out it's annual Reader's Poll. In the category of Best New Band, the way things stacked up was Prodigy at number three, the Wallflowers at number two, and at number one, a Florida band based out of Orlando. But lead singer and songwriter Rob Thomas says he hopes it doesn't focus too much attention on the band itself. He says what matters most is the songs. He says, 'I've never claimed to be an interesting guy. What matters most is that people show up at out shows and sing along with the songs. If I had to choose between someone knowing my name and knowing my songs, I'd choose the songs every time.' This week, one of those song's is on the lips of millons as they song along to what is now the biggest hit in the land.
	: : : : : DRUMROLL : : : : : The brand new number one song on Casey's Hot 20 is...'3am' by Matchbox 20."
-Wallbox20@aol.com

And 3am is #1 on the Modern Rock Charts ( from VH1's numbers 1's)
-Jujubes585@aol.com

During the VH1 TopTen Countdown, MB20 made # 3 with 3AM...Soon to be # 1 I hope!!!!
-JGGnJS@aol.com

This morning (Feb20) "3am" was #2 on the top 10 countdown on VH1!!!

~A special Matchbox 20 feature of the issue~

-Interview conducted by Marc Weinroth

Recently, Matchbox 20 fan and entertainment writer for South Florida's most popular newspaper the Sun-Sentinel interviewed rhythm guitarist Adam Gaynor via telephone.

M = Marc
A = Adam

A: Hello?
M: Hey! What's up? How are you?
A: I'm doing well. I'm a little sleepy but I'm feeling good.
M: How's the tour going?
A: The tour is going good. Right now we're in the middle of rehearsals.
M: What was it like coming into the band and adjusting to the other guys, since you were an addition after Rob, Paul, and Brian were together.
A: Oh my god, talk about a mental and physical adjustment for everybody. I think that anytime you get together with a whole new group of people, there's going to be some huge adjustments, and I think the first six months we all wanted to basically kill each
other, mainly because you're not used to other people's habits and their quirkiness. It took a while for everybody to really get comfortable and used to each other. We hit it off initially, like when I went up to audition for the guys, we totally hit it off as a band and friends, but when you start living with everybody, it gets a little different. Long story short, it only took a little while for us to get used to what's going on and then you just get used to it, and all of a sudden you're like best friends and we love each other
to death now, we'd go down to the death for each other. Right now it's just everything is great and we're all getting along really well.
M: What was it like working with your producer Matt Serletic?
A: It was great. Not only is he just super talented, but he's super sweet as well. He's also our brother. I mean he is our sixth member in the band. There's five of us and then there's Matt.
M: What's your favorite track on the album and favorite track to play live?
A: It's hard to say on the album. I love all the songs and they're all so different that I don't know. One of the reasons that I joined the band is that when I heard Rob acoustically sing "Push" like way back it was even finished, it was just such a special song and I could tell the minute I heard it. That's one of my favorite songs on the album. Just thinking of the album and what Rob has done, I mean I like "Kody" and man, I can't even single one out. But "Push" I just knew was going to do well and it was one of my favorite songs. There's a lot of songs I like playing live. "Busted"
is very fun doing live and "Kody" is fun live too. I just try to have fun with every song.
M: What do you like best about touring?
A: It's just a lot of fun to go out there and do this for a living and have a lot of people screaming at you. There's nothing more exciting than that. It's fun to go out there and represent your band and your album and just have a good time.
M: Do you guys choose your opening bands?
A: We have the say in who we want to open for us. Cool For August is touring with us. Matt, our producer, did their album and they are very good friends of ours now and we met them from him. We just wanted them to come out with us for a while,
and they said that they would. We're very fortunate to have them. They're a very good band and I think that's going to make for a great bill.
M: Playing shows - is that all fun for you or does it get tiring?
A: It's weird. I get asked that question a lot and I'm waiting for the day when it gets monotonous to play the same songs over and over, but I still think that every night we go out there, we're so focused on presenting the songs as best as possible. It's still fun and it's still challenging to go out there and we work really hard at it. We try to throw in some cover songs here and there just to keep it interesting and rearrange the set order, or even add something to our light show, just to keep it a little different all the time. It hasn't become tedious yet. It's still very exciting and I'm waiting for that day when it's finally going to hit and it becomes tedious. At this point I'm still having a good time.
M: The guy on the cover of the album. What's that about and who is he?
A: That's Paul's dad. His dad lives in Kansas and he's a crop duster and every morning he gets up and has a glass of orange juice and gases up his biplane and goes out ... wait a minute, I'm sorry. That whole thing was a lie.
M: (laughing) No it's OK, I was reading something, I think Paul was giving an answer to where the group's name came from, and he was talking about how it was named after the midget basketball team that his dad used to play for.
A: Oh shit. Yeah, he's taken my midget basketball story. I'm getting really mad a him too. All of my good stories are getting taken by people. So that was my midget basketball league story.
M: Oh, it was your story, huh?
A: Yeah, I don't want to get involved with that because its very politically touchy right there. The truth is, it's a guy from a modeling agency in New York. He was intended to be in our photo shoot and it just worked out that that one picture was so interesting and we were all like 'oh my god, that is the album.'
M: The title Yourself or Someone Like You, what was that named after?
A: Rob and Paul went to a nightclub in Los Angeles and there was some girl singing on the corner, and she was playing her guitar. She said, 'this is a song I wrote and its for yourself or someone like you.' They came running back to the bus and we had just told the label what the album title was going to be and they went through all this shit and did all this stuff, they put all of these promos together with the old album title on it and they were like 'no you can't change it' and we were like 'no, we're changing
it', and they were like 'nope, can't do it,' and we said, 'well, we're changing it.' It was like oh my god we're about to get killed by this label.
M: Did you ever think the record was going to be so successful? I mean, you guys have gone four times platinum now!
A: It's weird. I think we all had a vision coming into this for ourselves and yourself or someone like you ... sorry about that... I won't do lazy cheesy jokes like that... but we all had a gameplan and work really hard at what we do. That's not to pat ourselves
on the back, but I think success has always been a goal of ours and to what degree you achieve it is always going to be a mystery. If we put or right foot forward and can play very well as a band and play well live, then Rob's songs will take care of the
rest and we hoped that we'd have some success.
M: Has fame affected you guys as a band and even you personally?
A: I won't talk to my parents anymore. I don't answer my friends' phone calls, and I only eat shrimp in the morning and I like to have a steak sometime around 11:30 in the afternoon. No, its weird, and you go home and all of your friends are asking you
questions and people you haven't heard from in 15 years are calling your house, you know, those are the weirdness things. You got cousins coming out of Albuquerque, New Mexico and you have no idea who these people are. That kind of stuff is a
little strange and disconcerting, but I guess as far as my head and all of our heads we are pretty well grounded and we ground each other. If somebody starts getting Mr. rock star head, then we'll all
just slam him down.
M: Now I've heard many times before that Adam is the oldest. How old would that be?
A: I believe what they said was that Adam was the wisest, because they use the word old sometimes to represent wisdom. I am the eldest matchstick. I'm 47. No, I'm 34 years old and the oldest kid.
M: What are your musical influences of the past and what do you listen to today?
A: Wow. I know as a band, I have to say REM, Al Green, Ani DiFranco, Old 97s. We've been on the freaking bus with each other for over a month so I can't really recall what the hell is going on. Band influences are all the same stuff. It's anywhere
from Stevie Wonder and Elton John to any current pop or rock music. Kyle and I have big R&B influences, and jazz influences. It's such a diverse collection of bands and sounds that I think that's what brings this band together as a fairly special group
because everybody has different interests and we try to bring that into the group.
M: Will "You And I And I" ever be released on an album?
A: That will probably be a soundtrack song at some point.
M: You guys are also on the Fleetwood Mac Roumors compilation album being released soon.
A: Yeah, that was a lot of fun. We got asked to do a song and said 'no' but after they threw us a big bag of cash we said 'sure' That's a joke. I'm just joking. They asked us and we said 'sure'. It was obviously an album that is one of the classic staples of rock
music. And to be able to do one of their songs is just great. You want to be able to go in there and just not screw it up, yet you want to put your own signature on it, but you don't want them to listen to it and say 'what the hell were they thinking about?'
M: What's the story behind the intro to 3 a.m. that Rob does in the live show? People are talking a lot about that.
A: People are talking about that? Really?
M: Yeah, everybody is saying that you have to hear 3 a.m. live.
A: Wow, then it was my idea. Again, I'm just trying to take credit for everything. It was my idea. It's just a really cool moment. It's like when you do the same song every day you try to make something a little more exciting, not only to keep us excited. It's
like if Brette Favre of the Green Bay Packers was going to throw in that one special play to keep the kids alert. You want to keep everybody awake. If you do the same plays everyday, somebody's going to jump offsides. The audience really appreciates it too as well. If you can do something different to a song, whether its the intro, well, it's just a time when Rob gets his own moment in the spotlight. It's a very intimate moment and it comes off really well. M: Your cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," do you guys still do that in concert?
A: We did that song a lot during the last tour, and I think we'll probably bring it back from time after time... that was kind of funny...
M: I though you said that you wouldn't say anything corny!
A: I get really bad in the morning. We'll probably play it once in a while because its one of the wonderful moments of the show where Kyle and Rob just get out there and play it on the acoustic guitar.
M: Do you guys write a different set list every night?
A: It's basically the same set list. You want to keep everything structured for your lighting crew and yourselves.
M: And then rock everyone out of the venue with "Long Day" at the end?
A: Well, who knows... there could be some wrinkles to the show, who knows? No secrets given Mr.!
M: Am I dreaming, or did I see something with you guys touring with the Stones for a date on their tour?
A: Yeah, we did a show out in Dallas with the Smashing Pumpkins, Dave Matthews Band and the Rolling Stones. It was a really incredible, interesting, weird kind of day. I was really excited to play in front of that audience because Dallas is a huge market for us as well, and I figured we have a lot of fans out there, even though the ticket prices were relatively high. I think that there were mostly Stones' fans and that was cool and it was great to play in front of a different crowd. We met them. They gave us five minutes to go into this little compound and just go
talk to them and I thought it was like 'hello Mick?' That's just nuts. If you meet John Lennon and the Beatles together I think that's about it. You could just die there. You've met about everyone. Elvis might be cool too but I mean come on, there's like three bands in the whole planet that you'd ever need to talk to and the Stones would be one of them. It was a real moment where you're just standing there, looking at Mick Jagger and saying 'Jesus Christ, what has this guy been through,' look at this guy!
M: Being the rhythm guitarist, do you still have fun with the acoustic versions of heavier songs like "Long Day" and '"Busted"?
A: Yeah, of course. I think we have a really good time playing acoustic. Some of my favorite moments were on the radio tours and we would just walk into someone's conference room, and we would just take our acoustic guitars in there and sit down and play for these radio programs. We'd beg them to play our album and those are some of our favorite times, except for the begging. We love playing acoustic. I think Kyle and I have grown a lot on the acoustic guitars.
M: When does the tour end and when do you think you guys will be back in the studio?
A: We are going to be out for a while. We are bouncing back and forth from the States and Europe and Australia this whole year so we'll be overseas several times. We'll be back here to play a leg of a tour and then we'll go back over there.
M: Will your next album be more of a collaborative effort, since Rob wrote all of the songs by himself on this record?
A: I think that there will be two or three songs, I'm not sure who is going to get what song on the album, but I think that there will be at least a song by maybe Kyle, Paul, maybe myself. I know that there will probably be three songs that aren't exclusively written by Rob. I think it will be more of a collaborative effort but Rob will write the majority of the album.
M: Another funny thing was when a fan at the Dallas show made mass photocopies of Paul's high school senior year book picture and put them all over the place. What was that like?
A: Holy shit. It was funny as hell. Just to see Paul's mug. I had no idea what it was. I think it said something like 'have you seen this man?', and I was looking at the picture and I swear to god it was like looking at something like when my father was younger. I had no idea what the hell it was. It looked nothing like Paul. And after the show, I was like what the hell, cause they foot down by my foot switch so I was looking at it and all over Paul's drum set and it was so funny. Now our guitar techs have them in their work boxes so we get to look at it everyday. It was really funny to see his picture down there.
M: Okay, on to Tabitha's Secret, which we won't talk about too much.
A: You can do whatever you want. I'm fine with that.
M: Are you guys still in a lawsuit with them?
A: Okay, so now you say 'we don't have to talk about that' and then you go and ask the most important question. I will not comment on anything about that. It's about love. It's about a global formation of love and just love for each other. Some people just don't have that love. All I know is that there is love in the world and there are people that don't have the love in the world. When the people that don't have the love in the world, that's when people get upset, and when people get upset they do wacky things.
M: Rob sounds so different on the Tabitha's Secret album than he does today.
A: Sure he does. I think that his voice has matured a lot.
M: Puberty?
A: Well you know, last time I checked, which believe me was like six hours ago .. oh well, that's another personal band story.
M: I know you've probably heard this one a million times. What about the comparisons to Hootie and the Blowfish and Counting Crows?
A: Oh my god! No, I've never actually heard that before. HA HA! That was me acting, did you like that?
M: Yeah, I'd give you the Oscar.
A: No, I just want a nomination. I don't know if I deserve it because I think Jodie Foster did a better men's category. That was a little weird, that comment. Anyways, that's something we've been compared to forever. To be honest with you, it has never
bothered me as a musician or as a band member. I think that's the biggest compliment that we've ever heard. Counting Crows, not only is Adam (Duritz) one of our dearest friends, but I think that's great. Hootie did so well. The truth is I even bought the Counting Crows album to see if Rob sounded like Adam, and I don't know
if I see the similarity that much. I mean maybe the style of their writing. Adam is a wonderful songwriter and my little Robbie is the man as well. (Continued in next part)
