The Beach House Privacy/Wind Lattice Project. At the left is the before picture and at the right is the after picture. The lattice runs from the front of the house to the back of the house on each side (but does not include the deck, which is on the seaward side) and across the back. In under the house it encloses a room about halfway back. The idea is to keep the wind from eroding the sand under the house, as well as to keep stray tourists from infiltrating the space under the house for whatever purpose they think of – and I won’t mention any.
This is a view under the building taken near the front
piling on the right side – it shows the elevator and the
boardwalk
which is
behind the
front stairs.
There is room
on either side
for future
paved parking.
There is a
gate into the
lattice room
from the front
(at the end of the board walk by the elevator and
then another gate out the back to the beach.
Because of the possibility of drifting sand we made
the back gate up rather high – and that is the
reason for the new bridge which runs from the old
boardwalk to the back gate. Actually the bridge
was an afterthought. The original plan was to have
stairs going up and through the gate and then down
into the “Basement” which is what you see above.
But the basement is in the future and about four
steps of the stairs got buried when we filled the hole we had dug. But they are there if the sand
ever washes away. Of course, if it ever gets that bad the stairs may wash away as well, but we
hope not. Anyway the bridge was built instead of the inside stairs. Since this picture was taken
the last sheet of lattice arrived and the back gate is now complete. July 2002
