I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change!
Chapter Six

Recap: As he looked through the drawer his hand found a picture. He took it out and looked at it. It was a picture of Mac and Nick hugging each other. He turned the picture over to see what it said. All it had on it was ‘summer ‘97’. “What happened to you two? And why won’t you tell me Mac. I guess I’ll just have to find out myself,” A.J. thought to himself as he put the picture back, and continued to snoop. A.J. was curious to find out where Mac kept her diary, or if she even had one. A.J. finally got tired of looking for her diary, so he sat down on her bed. When he sat down on her bed, his hand hit something buried beneath the covers. He took it out and realized what it was; it was Mac’s diary. He opened it up, but then quickly shut it. “I can’t do this. It’s not right, but what else am I gonna do. I have to help her,” he thought. So he opened her diary, and began to read.

As he opened her diary he found articles of the guys. Stuff from German and British magazines. Articles about their great success and how they are so much more than your average “boy band”. A.J. laughed to himself as he read some of her entries from their very first tour in Europe. Mac had come with them for the first time. He couldn’t help but laugh as he turned the pages and continued to read her personal and intimate thoughts. He stopped when he came across one page. He felt a pang of jealousy mixed with total betrayal as he read a passage from two years ago.
 “       March, 1997
 Dear Diary,
So much has happened these past few months—years. Nick and I are dating, but secretly. I feel so terrible about keeping this from A.J., but it’s necessary. He can’t find out, not yet anyway. He would be so angry. Or maybe he wouldn’t be. Why do I care what A.J. thinks? Because he’s my best friend. Why would he hate the idea of Nick and I together? I don’t know how to answer that, but I do know he wouldn’t be happy. He’s like a big brother most of the time.  I’m glad I have him though. I don’t know what I would do without him…”
A.J. couldn’t read anymore of that. Mac dated Nick, but that still didn’t explain what happened. A.J. continued to read the passages in between. It was just more about Mac and Nick. A.J. got to one page that caught his attention though.
 “      December 1997
 Dear Diary,
After almost two years of dating Nick, it’s over. Let me tell you it ended tragically too. He said he had found someone else, and that he didn’t love me that way. I could handle the ‘I don’t love you that way’ part, but another girl? I was so mad. He said he had been seeing her for three months. I asked him if he cheated on me for so long why didn’t he just break up with me? Then he had the audacity to say that I cheated on him too. Not physically, but mentally. He said that I loved and would always be in love with A.J. I was totally mad at him. I still am; I don’t think I’ll ever forgive him. Two years of my life wasted on him. When he said the thing about A.J., it made me think. Is it true? Could I love A.J.?”
A.J. sat shocked. Could Mac love him? A.J. searched through her diary to find later entries, but he didn’t find any. That was the last one she had written in there.
“Do I love Mac,” he said aloud to himself this time making sure no one else was there. Mac meant the world to him yes, but love. He was angry that Mac hadn’t told him any of this, but why was he angry? Because his best friend was hurt, or because she went out with Nick? “Nick’s a good guy, even though he hurt her.” A.J. thought. “I’ve gotta get out of here,” A.J. said once again to himself. He closed her diary and put it back where he found it. He straitened her room up, and walked back downstairs.
“Hey A.J.” Gina said as A.J. walked right past her. “Bye A.J.”
“Hey Bone, where ya going?” Nick asked and angry looking A.J. He stopped and stared at Nick for a moment, holding himself back from hitting him.
“Out.” A.J. said through clenched teeth.
“When will you be back?” said Stacy.
“Later.” With that said A.J. was gone, and no one knew exactly whereto.
