Introduction to Polo
(As little as I know):
Polo is considered to be an "elite" sport, some people refer to as "The sport of Kings"; but nowadays it is accessible to almost anybody that has a passion for horses and competition.
I myself have watched a few Polo matches and below I will try to explain the rules of the game, the scores, etc. and also, I will suggest some books that will give you some idea of what the game is all about.
I exhort you to go and watch one or two Polo games. I assure you that if you like horses, you will enjoy this game immensely, it is very intense, but also full of grace.
At the beginning you might be a little bored, until you understand the game. Then you will see how the horses and the players form a bond, is like one is the continuation of the other, this alone will grab your attention.
I have to confess that I went to see a game because it was the "in" thing to do. Later, when all the players were riding there horses and all you could hear was the horses' running I got more and more into the game. I have to say that it was mesmerizing.
The Polo Clubs are a very nice place to go. You meet lots of different people and you can spend a nice day or afternoon with your family or just by yourself. It is also fun because you can either wear a sundress and a hat or a pair of jeans and a baseball cap and it does not matter. You will blend in anyway.
I am so hooked in this game, that I watched the matches on Television. I have been reading about it and I am taking horseback riding lessons (Ladies, this is great for your thighs). So, yes, I confess, now I am not only hooked on Tommy "my baby" Lee, I am also crazy about horses.
So, go ahead; watch a Polo match even if the San Saba team is not playing. Learn more about it and enjoy how strong, elegant and royal a horse can be.Some additional facts about this Game:
Polo: game in which two teams of players mounted on horseback use long mallets to attempt to drive a ball through the opponent's goal. The outdoor game is played on a field no more than 300 yd (274.3 m) long and 160 to 200 yd (146.3 to 182.9 m) wide. Indoor fields are generally smaller. The goal consists of two upright 8-yd (7.3 m) apart. The ball used outdoors, formerly made of wood, is now plastic, and it is 3 to 3.5 in (7.6 to 8.9 cm) in diameter. The indoor ball is leather-covered, inflated, and about 4.5 in (11.4 cm) in diameter. An outdoor team has four players; indoors, three make a team. A game is divided into 7-minute periods, or chukkers. As many as eight chukkers may be played.
Polo is thought to have originated in Persia before the Christian era and to have spread to other Asian countries. The game was particularly popular in India in the 16th century. Modern polo was brought from India to England in 1869 and to the United States about 1876.
