ONE
Lyrics: Bono. Music: U2.
Is it getting better?
Or do you feel the same?
WIll it make it easier on you now
You got someone to blame?
You say
One love
One life
When it's one need
In the night
One love
We get to share it
It leaves you baby
If you don't care for it
Did I disappoint you?
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well it's too late
Tonight
To drag the past out into the light
We're one
But we're not the same
We get to carry each other
Carry each other
One
Have you come here for forgiveness?
Have you come to raise the dead?
Or have you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head?
Did I ask too much?
More than a lot?
You gave me nothing
Now it's all I got
We're one
But we're not the same
We hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love, a higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt
One love
One blood
One life
You got to do what you should
One life
With each other
Sisters
Brothers
One life
But we're not the same
We get to carry each other
Carry each other
One

VIDEOS
- Version 1: Directed by Phil Joanou. Concept: Bono sits in a bar, quietly drinking and singing, as flashes of the band members and various romantic interests (as well as some live footage) flicker across the screen. Chris' Thoughts: ****. Looks great, but is a little devoid of substance especially in comparison to...
- Version 2: Directed by Anton Corbijn. Concept: The band-- shot in brown and white-- cross-dress, perform, and drive around the newly unified Berlin in Trabants with naked folk painted on them as Bono's dad stars in a number of highly symbolic images. Chris' Thoughts: *****. Looks great WITH substance. One of the greats.
- Version 3: Directed by Mark Pellington. Concept: The word "One" in various languages flashes across the screen as buffalo tromp through the praries in grainy, turn-of-the-century footage. Capped by artist David Wojnarowicz's photo of the buffalo leaping to their deaths from a cliff-- a metaphor for the human condition, as we are all pushed by forces we cannot understand (where for the buffalo it was Native American tribes). This image is also the cover for the ONE single, whose proceeds were donated to AIDS Research (Wojnarowicz is/was HIV-positive).
