Chapter Three

I yawned as I turned the page of my favorite book, Gone With The Wind. I loved that book. I've read it a million times, but I was always just as anxious and interested as I was the first time I read it, like something different is going to happen. Just as I was about to drift off to sleep, the phone next to me rang. I jumped and groaned as I reached over and clicked on the cordless phone, bringing it to my ear. "Hello?" I answered softly, sleepiness apparent in my voice. There was a loud scream into the phone. I recognized it as Leah's. I took a deep breath and waited for the screaming to stop.

"Yes?" I asked when she was finished.

"I won something," she said as calm as can be. I had to smile, she was great.

"What did you win?" I asked.

"Three backstage passes and second row center tickets for the Backstreet Boys," she said like it was nothing.

"Do you know who they are?" I asked, figuring she didnt.

"I've heard of them, but never seen them. I was thinking about going and buying their CDs, they've got two out in the states. But, you and Megan are going with me!" she shreiked.

"That's cool. Ive heard of them too. I wonder what they look like," I asked, picturing your typical boy band. One blonde, the rest dark hair. I smiled to myself.

"Call Megan and scream in her ear, telling her you have awesome seats for a concert of a band you've only heard of, ok?" I asked laughing.

" 'Kay, bye," she said and hung up. I clicked off the phone and turned out the lamp next to my bed. I threw my book aimlessly on the floor and curled up in a ball, warming my cold body with my much loved mink blanket.

As I was drifting off to sleep, I started to think about that guy in the mall. I was somewhere in the middle of sleep and awake as I began to think of ways I could find out who he was. AJ, that was his name. AJ. I pictured his amazing body and his almost edible lips. Then I began to picture Bambi (I named her that because it's a name that suits her). Her blonde hair bouncing as she ran up to him.

"Maybe it was his long lost cousin or something," I told myself.

"Yeah, a very affectionate cousin," I sighed. I opened my eyes and immediately cursed myself. I wouldn't be able to sleep at all tonight. I had work tomorrow morning. At least it wouldnt be Monday. Tuesday's are always a little better for me.

I think I was wrong tonight though. I wont get any sleep, so Tuesday will be hell. I sighed and sat up. The lights from the outside pool shone into my apartment. I sighed in aggravation with myself. I shouldnt let him get to me.

"I'm going swimming," I declared and got up. I put on my bathing suit and walked out of the apartment. Immediately I knew I made a mistake. It was cold. Very cold. Living in Tampa most of my life, anything below 70 degrees is freezing.

I shivered as goosebumps crawled up my back, against my will. I looked over to the pool and saw some guy in there swimming.

"It's heated," he called. I sighed in relief and rushed over to the pool and stepped into the refreshing water that felt like a warm bath. I put my whole body in as I let the heat of the water relax all my muscles.

"Feels good huh?" he asked.

For the first time I got a good look at the guy. I smiled and nodded. He was attractive. He wasn't tall, taller than myself, but not tall. He had blondish brownish hair and crytal blue eyes, that were enchanting. He had a nice build and I automatically knew Leah would be interested in him.

"Im Brian," he said. His thick southern accent charmed me. I liked it.

"Melissa, nice to meet you," I said, smiling.

"So what are you doing out so late?" he asked coming closer to me.

"Couldn't sleep. I was thinking too much," I laughed.

He smiled and leaned up against a wall.

"What about you?" I asked curious.

"My girlfriend and I had a fight," he replied softly, not looking into my eyes.

"Im sorry," I said sympatically.

"No one's fault but my own," he shrugged. I was curious. I wonder if he'll tell me before I HAVE to ask.

"I work too much. I cant help it. The profession Im in requieres a lot of travel and she doesnt understand that," he told me.

"Maybe she'll come around," I suggested.

He shrugged and looked up at the sky. He studied it for a good while without saying anything. For a minute I thought he had fallen asleep.

"Maybe I just dont want her to," Brian said crawling out of the pool.

I watched him as he walked over to a towel and wrapped it around his waist. For some reason I felt that he and I would become very good friends. He would become very important.

"See you around Melissa. I can sense her looking for me," he laughed. I smiled.

"Nice talking to you Brian," I called.

I decided that I was done with my warm dip in the pool and I got out and walked dripping wett to my apartment. I went in and changed into my bed clothes and crawld back in bed. I fell asleep with no problem, not a single thought on my mind, ok maybe one, AJ.
