Chapter One

“Hey baby,” a tall, lanky guy winked at me as I walked down the beach. I looked at him confused, wondering why he was talking to me.

“Hi,” I mumbled and kept walking.

“My name’s Chris,” he said running up to catch up to me.

“Uh, nice to meet you Chris,” I said looking around for my promotional manager.

“What’s your name beautiful?” he asked smiling at me, a huge gap between his two front teeth. I smiled, displeased with his appearance. I know it was a shallow thing to say, but his skinny build and scruffy appearance wasn’t appealing at all.

“Steph,” I lied.

“Hey Steph, how about I take you out to dinner?” he asked, winking at me, again. What’s with the winking thing? I stopped walking and looked around for my promotional manager, desperately wanting to find him.

“Damn you John,” I cursed under my breath.

“Um, I dont...” I began, feeling bad for being mean.

“Honey, where’ve you been? I’ve been looking everywhere for you. I got you the ice cream you wanted. I had a few bites,” a tall blonde, gorgeous blonde, guy said coming up to me. He handed me the ice cream cone he claimed to have gotten for me. I had never seen this guy before in my life. For some reason, I felt like I should know him, but I couldnt put a finger on it.

“Uh, looking for you actually,” I said, smiling, thanking him with my eyes for saving me from the strange guy.

“You have a boyfriend?” the guy accused me.

I looked at him and shrugged, “Yeah.”

“Well, take care of her,” the guy said looking at the tall blonde.

“Um... right.. I will,” he said smiling. The guy winked at me again and began to go his own way.

“Thank you so much,” I laughed looking up at the tall blonde. I suddenly felt self-conscious under his gaze. I looked away unsure of what I should say next. I smiled down at the ice cream cone he had given me.

“Here’s your ice cream,” I laughed. He smiled and took it back.

“My name is Nick,” he said holding his hand out to me.

“Hey Nick, Im Miranda,” I said blushing a little. It wasnt often when I let guys intimidate me, but this guy was just too cute.

“Miranda! There you are!” John said rushing up to me.

“Is this guy rescuing you from me?” Nick laughed.

“No, he was actually looking for me,” I laughed.

“Oh... I see,” he said smiling.

“Hey John, you couldve found me like five minutes ago,” I scolded him.

“Why?” he asked looking at Nick.

“Cause, some guy was hitting on me,” I replied.

“Oh, well.. come on, they’re ready for you,” he ordered me.

“Ok, it was nice meeting you Nick.” I told him.

“As well as you. I hope to see you again,” he told me.

“Yeah... maybe I could give you my...” I said about to finish my sentence before John pushed me along.

“Let’s go Miranda, work calls,” he said.

I shrugged at Nick and waved. I walked over to where all the cameras and workers were standing around.

I was busy working on a Pepsi commercial. Im a rising model, brand new to the business. People were rushing around and I was attacked by about four people, working on getting me ready for the shoot. One dabbed makeup on my face, one started rubbing some kind of oil on my legs, another working on my hair, and yet another shoving a can of Pepsi into my hands.

“You know what to do,” the guy told me.

After a few hours, the commercial was finished and I was allowed to return home.

“You have a photo shoot first thing in the morning for Neutrogena,” John told me.

“What time is first thing in the morning?” I asked.

“Seven,” he said. I groaned and started walking to my car, a metallic blue BMW Z3 Roadster convertible. It was my baby.

“Miranda, dont you forget,” John warned me.

“I wont, but I can promise you that I wont be looking my best that early in the morning,” I said smiling and slipping my sunglasses over my eyes. I pulled my long brown hair into a pony-tail and crawled into my car.

“Dont worry about that. They’ll make you look your best.” he said smiling.

I laughed and started my car. John looked down at me and smiled.

“You’re too spoiled,” he laughed.

“What makes you say that?” I asked acting innocent.

“Get going, and dont go eating your entire snack cabinet, you’ve got to do an Armani ad tomorrow at noon,” he told me.

“Normal people dont buy Armani, why should I do an ad?” I asked.

“Because we told you so,” he said smiling.

“Bye John,” I said and drove off onto the strip. I started thinking about that boy I met on the beach, Nick. He was really cute, I wonder if he is still here? I shrugged, figuring I’d never see him again, and let it drop.

When I got to my apartment that was only about five minutes from the beach, I parked my car and walked up to my place. When I opened the door, I went immediately to my machine and saw that I had no messages.

“Figures,” I groaned. My boyfriend hardly kept in touch anymore. He was pretty pissed when I moved to Florida, not understanding how important my career was to me. He was completely capable of moving in with me, but chose to stay in Georgia, where I was originally from. I sighed as I threw myself on the couch and looked around. I hadn’t bothered buying much for my apartment, I was hardly home to enjoy it, so I went without many things. I looked over at my PC, the only thing I definitely declared a needing. I walked over and turned it on and signed online. I was in the kitchen, getting myself something to drink when I heard a knock at my door. I sighed, wondering who it could be. I wasn’t expecting anyone. I rushed to the door and swung it open. My boyfriend, Will, was standing with a bouquet of bright red roses.

“Will!” I exclaimed throwing my arms around his neck and holding him close.

“Hey baby, surprised?” he asked, laughing as we pulled away.

“Yes!” I laughed, kissing him softly.

“I missed you and decided to drive down here and see you,” he told me.

“I missed you too. Come in,” I said, leading the way into my apartment.

“For some big time model, you don’t have much to show for it,” he said looking around.

“I have my BMW Z3 downstairs, that’s all I need to show for it,” I replied, turning around to roll my eyes.

“So, what are you doing tonight?” he asked.

“Nothing, why?” I asked, sitting down on the couch next to him.

“Cause, I wanted to take you out to dinner,” he said smiling.

“Ok, mind if I take a shower first? I’ve been on the beach all day. I’m sandy and sweaty,” I asked.

“Go ahead, and uh, casual,” he told me.

“Ok,” I said and turned off the computer and rushed to the bathroom and took a quick shower. When I got out, I blow dried my hair and left it to hang down my back, I put on little makeup, and put on a yellow flowered skirt and a white, figure fitting shirt to match. I put on a pair of brown sandals and walked out into the living room, where Will was walking around, looking at stuff.

“What are you doing?” I asked, curious.

“Nothing, come here baby, you look beautiful,” he told me.

“Thank you,” I blushed.

“Are you ready?” he asked.

“Yeah,” I replied.

“Great, come on,” he said smiling.

We left the apartment.

“Who’s car?” he asked, looking at his old, beat up pick up truck and then at my baby.

“Uh, I dont care,” I said, hoping he wasn’t expecting to drive my car.

“Let’s take your car,” he suggested. smiling.

“Um, ok,” I said rushing to the driver’s side.

“You’re not going to let me drive?” he asked, pouting.

“Maybe later,” I laughed nervously and clicked the alarm of my car. I opened the door and Will and I got in.

“This is a nice car. It’s nice to finally see it, after someone’s been bragging for three months,” he said smiling.

“Well, I love this car, so where are we going?” I asked.

“Right up the street. I stopped there before we got here,” he said.

“Ok, what’s the place called?” I asked, a little annoyed.

“I dont know, its a seafood place,” he said.

“Ok, as if there arent a hundred seafood places along the beach,” I mumbled.

“Right there,” he said pointing.

I pulled into the parking lot and parked my car. When I got out, I hit the alarm and Will and I walked up to the restaurant hand-in-hand.

I looked around, it wasn’t much of a restaurant, more like a bar for single men.

I smiled, displeased and followed Will to the back of the bar and we sat at a booth.

He picked up a menu, like it was nothing and browsed through it.

I slowly looked over the menu.

I decided on a shrimp meal, that didnt sound appealing, but compared to everything else on the menu, it sounded the best.

“So, who’s Nick?” he asked looking up at me. I looked at him confused. Nick? I dont know a Nick.

“I dont know. Should I know a Nick?” I asked.

“I dont know, you tell me, you were talking to him on the beach today,” he said.

I sat for a minute, thinking about it, then realized who he was talking about.

“Oh! I dont know him. He just kind of saved me from this guy who was hitting on me,” I replied.

“You seemed quite attracted to him,” he said.

“How do you know I was talking to a guy named Nick?” I asked, a little irritated and scared at the same time. I didn’t even see him anywhere around me.

“I have my sources,” he said to me.

“Will, that scares me. You can get your little sources to move on,” I snapped.

“Why does it scare you? Guilty conscience?” he asked.

“Will, I’ve been too busy with work to have a guilty conscience. Why all of the sudden are you throwing accusations at me?” I argued.

“No reason,” he sighed and looked up at the waiter that was standing in front us.

“Sorry about that,” I mumbled.

The guy grinned at me, then looked at Will.

“So, can I get you two anything to drink?” he asked.

“Yeah, and we’re ready to order,” Will said.

“I dont remember ever saying I was ready to order,” I said.

“Are you ready?” Will snapped at me.

“Yes,” I replied.

“Ok, then, I want...” I zoned out. Why was I even with him. He treated me like shit, right now my career is more important. And he’s a loser. He lives off his mother because he knows he can. The jerk hasnt had a job in almost a year. As soon as we graduated from high school- he went straight to the couch. I needed to find a way out of this.
