Chapter Nine

I was about fed up with the entertainment industry. I was convinced it sucked. I had to get out of it.

I took a plane with Nick to Los Angeles to talk to my agent and get back to a normal life. Nick squeezed my hand, "You're doing a good thing. Doing what you want for a change."

I smiled, "I think so, too. I can't wait to be a nobody. College... friends..."

I walked into my agents office and went to her secretary, Leila.

"Leila, I need to speak to Marie," I said.

Leila snapped her gum and looked at me, "She's booked this week."

That fact made me mad. I made most of Marie's income and my own and she didn't have time for me? I don't think so.

I walked past Leila and I heard her call, "Megan! I said..."

I didn't listen and I flung open Marie's door. "Megan, hi," Marie said.

"We need to talk," I demanded.

"No time, Meg. Schedule with Leila for next week," Marie said, "Meet my new clients, a singing group from Vermont. They're only 15, the Surfer Girls they call themselves."

I balled up my fists by my side. I couldn't wait a week to break my contract, "Marie, don't you ever tell me you don't have time for me," I screamed, "If I say jump you ask how high. I make both of our incomes. Understand?"

"Gals, could you please wait in the lobby," Marie asked, calmly. The Surfer Girls left. "Now Megan, how can I help you?"

"I'm breaking my contract," I said.

"What?" Marie shrieked.

"Did I stutter? I'm officially done with Hollywood," I said.

"No, you can't do that. Megan..." Marie began.

I rolled my eyes, "Marie, don't. Just give me my fine and what I have to sign."

"Megan, hun, you don't want to do this," Marie said.

"Damnit Marie, don't tell me what I want," I yelled, "You just don't want to lose any money. You know what, take all my money and I'll live in a shack and I bet I'll be even happier."

Marie stood, shocked, behind her desk, "You know... this is permanet."

"I know, that's the beauty of it," I said, calmer.

Marie sighed and shook her head, "After all I've done for you," she muttered. She went to her filing cabinet and pulled out some paperwork, filling it our quickly.

"Read this and sign where indicated," Marie instructed.

I read over the five pages and signed my name fifteen times. I handed Marie the paperwork and sighed contently as I wrote the check for Marie. I signed it and handed it to her.

"Good-bye Marie," I said, leaving her office and finding Nick in the lobby. He stood up and I threw my arms around his neck.

"How do you feel," he asked.

I inhaled his sweet cologne, "Better than I have in years."

We walked hand in hand out of the office. "Good-bye Hollywood, "I whispered.

Nick laughed, "I love you."

I looked up at him and gave him a quick kiss, "I love you, too."
