Lilith Fair: Changes And Secrets
(8/10/99, 1 a.m. PDT) - Pop sensation Christina Aguilera has canceled two of her four scheduled dates on the Lilith Fair tour. Replacing her today (Aug. 10) at the Polaris Amphitheater in Columbus, Ohio and Saturday (Aug. 14) at Pine Knob in Detroit is "David Duchovny" singer Bree Sharp, according to Lilith organizers.
In addition, Tracy Bonham has pulled out of her two Lilith dates. Beth Orton covered for Bonham on Aug. 1 at the Finger Lakes Performing Arts Centre in Canandaigua, N.Y., and Liz Phair will be replacing her on Friday (Aug. 13) at the Salt Lake Amphitheatre in Pittsburgh.
Meanwhile, both Sarah McLachlan and co-Lilith Fair organizer Terry McBride are hopeful that someone will pick up the torch with a new female-oriented tour in 2000, after Lilith Fair's swan song on Aug. 31.
McLachlan, however, isn't sure she will give away the secrets to the tour's success. "We've set up an amazing infrastructure that has been worked on for 10 years to get to this point--or 15 years, in some cases," she says. "It's not something that you want to just give away. I don't mean to be cold-hearted or anything, but I've been on a lot of tours that aren't run very well and this one has run amazingly and that's because of the infrastructure that's been worked on.
"Hopefully people can look at this tour and understand why it does work because there's a lot of great people doing their jobs and feeling good about it," she adds. "And that's one of the most important bottom lines."
Meanwhile, McBride has no plans to continue the tour without the headliner and co-founder. "There's no Lilith without Sarah," he says.
Features on Bree Sharp are available now on LAUNCH.com; look for a Christina Aguilera feature soon.
