What is Taekwondo ?



Taekwondo is an ancient Korean martial art. Over the many years it has become a popular international sport. The main feature of Taekwondo is that it is a free-fighting combat sport using the bare hands and feet to repel the opponent.It consists of sharp strong angular movements with free flowing circular movements to produce a balance of beauty and power. With the addition of Taekwondo's trademark kicks it is a complete system of self defense and personal improvement. All of its techniques are based on a defensive attitude, and are meant to be used only for the purpose of self-defense

INTERPRETATION OF THE TERM 'TAEKWONDO'

TAE - Means to Punch with a fist
KWON - Means to Kick with a leg
DO - represents an Art

All in all 'Taekwondo' represents an art of self defense in which the hands and legs are used as the primary weapons


THE FIVE TENETS OF TAEKWONDO

Though an art of combat, the objective of 'Taekwondo' is not to encourage or promote fighting. It is an art which is very effective in strengthening the human mind and body, and in helping one develop an admirable level of self control. Every practitioner of Taekwondo is expected to abide by and practice the following tenets in their day to day life :
