"No. We're. NOT!" Sinbad argued back, beginning to lose his temper.
"Oh, really? Mr. Big Shot, Master of the Seven Seas, thinks he's too good to be lost!?"
"Maeve, I know EXACTLY where we're going!"
"Oh, you do, do you?"
"Aye, as a matter of fact, I DO!"
"Then I suppose you've led us past that same tree five times ON PURPOSE!!!"
Sinbad stopped and looked at the tree Maeve was pointing at. *Oops,* he thought. "So maybe we've taken a wrong turn or two," he allowed.
"ONE or TWO!?" Maeve shouted. "And what's this whole 'we' thing? 'Just follow me, Maeve,'" she mimicked, "'I'll have us back in no time.' HA! It's been three hours. THREE!!! And we're right back where we started."
"I was just..... getting my bearings."
"Well, have you gotten them yet?"
"Um... Not quite," he answered cautiously.
"Hmph!" was the only reply he got as Maeve plopped herself down on a log and buried her face in her hands.
Sinbad was getting tired of this. There was no WAY he was going to lose this argument. Especially to HER! "Well it's not my fault the day is cloudy! I can barely tell where the sun is!" As he spoke rain began to trickle down from above. "And now it's raining! Why don't you use your magic and clear up the sky or something!?"
"I'm just an apprentice! I'm still learning!" Maeve screamed back, getting up from her spot on the log and getting right in Sinbad's face.
"Well why don't you learn something useful for a change!?" It came out sounding more like an accusation than a question, and at this comment Maeve's face took on an expression of shock and hurt. As she slowly backed away from Sinbad, he thought, *Damn. Wrong choice of words...*
"So I'm useless?" Maeve asked in a tiny voice.
"Maeve, that's not what I meant. I--"
"No, it's exactly what you meant!" she interrupted. Maeve turned so that Sinbad wouldn't be able to see the tears forming in her eyes. "Maybe you're better off without me!" she said as she started to walk away.
"Maeve-" he pleaded as he reached for her arm, but she shrugged him off and broke into a run. "Maeve, WAIT!" he shouted and took off after her.
She had a good lead on him, but he was close enough to see when she tried to stop and skidded on the wet grass. Close enough to hear her scream as she reached for something to grab hold of and caught nothing but air. His heart dropped as he watched her disappear over the cliff's edge and knew he couldn't save her.
