THE KING OF PEACE

Although some of the Obatalas are seasoned warriors, for the most part, Obatala is considered an Orisha of Peace. For that reason, the white dove is associated with him. The white dove also represents purity, which is another attibute of Obatala. Obatala likes to see peace reign on earth and in heaven, among the other Orishas. He is often called upon when there is strife between men or gods. Obatala's gift is tranquility and peace of mind. We ask that Obatala share his wisdom with you and give you peace, that peace that comes from understanding.

Ra was the name of the Egyptian creator god. He was also the sun god. There was no differentiation between sun god and creator god, as with the Yorubas. Obatala was merged with Olorun to become Ra in the Egyptian pantheon. There have been several studies comparing Egyptian religion and customs to the religions of West African and their customs. The conclusion seems to be that there are many similarities that would indicate an interchange. It is hard to say whether the West Africans imported their religion to Egypt or whether West African beliefs are derived from Egytian sources. There is the oral legend that the Africans were guided from Egypt to West Africa by Olorun, the sun god, or Ra. Perhaps, the africans were escaping slavery as the Hebrews did in the course of their history.
