ADVANCEMENT IN RATE


1. Promotion or advancement in rate is a significant part of your NJROTC experience. You have complete control over how fast and how high you advance. If you study the required material and maintain the proper military performance record, you will be able to advance without difficulty.

2. All Naval Science 1 Cadets enter the program as a Seaman Recruit (E-1). After completion of the requiered time-in-grade, you may take an advancement exam. Cadets failing any portion of the exam, may retake the exam after a one week delay.

3. Any cadet selected as Cadet of the Quarter will receive a spot promotion to the next higher grade (up to E-7).

4. The following is the schedule of promotions; it shows the minimum time required to serve in each rate:

SEAMAN APPRENTICE 9 WEEKS

SEAMAN 18 WEEKS

PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS 27 WEEKS

PETTY OFFICER 2RD CLASS COMPLETE NS-1

PETTY OFFICER 1ST CLASS 3 MONTHS AS PO2

CHIEF PETTY OFFICER COMPLETE NS2

5. Requirements for advancement:

SEAMAN APPRENTICE

Written test on individual drill (Chapters 5,6 CFM) Have a "C" average in Naval Science during the previous 9 week period and wear the uniform when required Complete a practical test on individual drill (Chapter 5,6 CFM) Complete a written test on military time No referrals to either of the deans during preceding 9 weeks. SEAMAN
Written test on squad drill (Chapter 5,6 CFM) Written test on Navy and USMC ranks and rates (NS-1 textbook) Written test on NJROTC ranks and rates and NJROTC Organization Have a C average in Naval Science during the previous 9 weeks. No referrals to either of the deans during preceding 9 weeks. All requirements of SA

PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS

Written test on manual of arms (chapter 7 CFM) Written test on respect for and display of the flag Demonstrate Manual of Arms and ability to lead squad in drill Have a "C" average in Naval Science during the previous 9 weeks. No referrals to either of the deans during preceding 9 weeks. Be qualified for Exemplary Conduct Award All requirements of SA,SN

PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS

Written test on uniform regulations (chapter 1 CFM) Written test on Guidon procedures (chapter 9 CFM) Written test on Color guard procedures (chapter 10 CFM) Have a "C" average in Naval Science during the previous 9 weeks. No referrals to either of the deans during preceding 9 weeks. No more than two unexcused absences during the previous 9 weeks No more than one tardy during the previous 9 weeks Chain of Command Cadet Chain of Command All requirements of SA,SN,PO3

PETTY OFFICER 1ST CLASS

Written test on Honors and Ceremonies (chapters 12 CFM ) Written test on Ranks and Rates (all services) No referrals to either of the deans during preceding 9 weeks. No more than one tardy during the previous 9 weeks No more than one unexcused absence during the previous 9 weeks All requirements of SA,SN,PO3,PO2

exam will contain a review of any or all of the above material plus a detailed examination on uniform regulations including the proper placement of insignia, devices, ribbons, etc Demonstrate the Manual of Arms for the sword Lead a platoon in Close Order Drill Be qualified for the Aptitude, Distinguished Cadet, and/or Exemplary Personal Appearance Award.
