At This Moment

I spent the afternoon driving around, when I saw Brian and Nick at the school playing basketball.

I sit on a bench watching them play, noticing how competitive they are.

"Hey," Nick said, tossing Brian the ball.

"What's up?"

"Not much. Who's winning?"

"Who else?" Brian asks, laughing. "He hates when he loses," he says, walking over and taking a seat next to me. "Where's Bone?"

"I don't know," I say, beginning to cry again, thinking I couldn't cry anymore.

"Hey," Brian says, "Are you okay? What happened?"

"It's nothing," I say, wiping tears. "It's just that I don't want to see him or talk about him."

"All right. Hey Frack, let's go get some food." Brian says, getting up, taking my hand. "Come on, let's go somewhere."

We ended up at a club, sitting in a corner booth, listening to the music.

"He just, well," I started. "It's just that I saw him yesterday with another girl, when we are supposed to be together."

"Oh, man," Nick says, "I told him not to do that."

"Who is she?" I ask, looking at Nick.

"It's his ex-girl, Marisa. She came back into town yesterday and he took her out to eat. There was probably nothing to it."

"I saw them, sitting side by side, he was feeding her, and he kissed her when she got into his car. He then drove her to this apartment building, walking her to the door, and didn't come back down for like thirty minutes."

Nick didn't say anything, he just looked down. "I'm sorry."

When I arrived home, I checked my answering machine, which was full of messages from Alex. He was constantly apologizing for what happened, and offering to introduce me to the girl, so I will know there is nothing between them.

The next morning, I was awakened by a knock at the door. When I answered it, there was a girl there, that I had recognized from the day before.

"Hi, you don't know me, but I am Marisa. I understand you are Alex's girlfriend."

"Oh, hi, would you like to come in?" I say, moving aside to allow her access into my home.

As she sits on the couch, "What brings you here?" I ask, sitting in the chair across from her.

"I just wanted to talk to you about what happened. I want you to know, there is nothing between Alex and I but friendship."

"Listen, I don't need this. We aren't together anymore, so you don't need to explain this to me. I would appreciate it if you just go, and don't try to get back in touch with me." I say, walking towards the door and opening it.

"He feels terrible about what happened. Just talk to him. You are all he talks about, he really loves you." She says, walking out.

I shut the door, locking it behind her. I wanted so badly to talk to him, but I didn't need his excuses.
