One of the fun things about doing these kind of living history demonstrations is that its a chance for children (and their parents) to try on replica armor, and handle (within reason) period style weapons.  I think that the tactile sense real gives a much better appreciation for what our ancestors tolerated a regualar basis, than even the best display under glass or behind the velvet rope will ever provide.
