Anselmo Cadelli, a Gay activist who had been assisting Max at Ulrichs' grave since the initial celebration in 1988, died in Rome at 6 p.m. on August 15, 2001, from encephalytis. He is buried in the Prima Porta cemetery. Anselmo, who was born on March 2, 1950, had been Max's friend since 1972.
What a difference a year makes! This time last year, when Paul and I (Mike) met Anselmo, he was just as vigorous and as happy-go-lucky as could be. It makes us doubly happy that we met him when we did.
Anselmo was very hospitable. He made us a special meal. He accompanied us to Ulrichs' grave (Max drove us in his car). I still have the 1000-lire note Anselmo gave me as a souvenir. It was one of the older notes, and he wanted me to have it.
That's all I know about Anselmo. Paul and I knew him less than a week, but his death represents a great loss to us, too.
Our sympathies go to all who knew and loved him.
