Florida can only gain with slots

I've been staying in Deerfield three to four months a year for seven years. I saw what happened when slot machines came to Ontario, New York state and Delaware. Pennsylvania and other states will follow.

Florida can only gain with slot machines. The horse industry will make a comeback, the schools will get a percentage, the state will get a percentage and the whole pari-mutuel industry will benefit.

The state and its people are not investing money in this practice. But the seven places where it will occur will build hotels, the purses for the horsemen will increase, thousands of jobs will appear and the schools will benefit without the taxpayer putting up a dime.

How can you not vote for such a deal? Don't miss this opportunity to vote yes on March 8.

Your recent editorial about the slot machine proposal failed to inform voters that by propping up dog tracks with slot machine profits, many thousands of graceful greyhounds will spend their lives in cages until they cannot run fast enough to win. They will then be killed or sold to labs for experimentation. There are organizations that try to find homes for the unwanted dogs, but this rescues only a small percentage of them.

By the way, they make great companions. They don't need extra exercise, just someone who cares for them and doesn't exploit them for money.

Please vote no on the slot machine issue. Educational funding doesn't need to come at the price of animal suffering.
