Close Encounters...Of Another Kind

Chapter 1

Molly was excited, as she walked through the entrance door of the "Hyatt-Regency-Hotel" in Cologne. It was an early November morning with grey clouds hanging in grey skies, but to her the world couldn't have been more cheerful.

The weather was cold, but even so there were a whole lot of noisy girls waiting outside for their favorite band to arrive. They were all waiting for the Backstreet Boys!

Molly wasn't only happy to escape from the cold, when she stepped into the warm hall. She also escaped from the other fans, who had watched her in envy as she walked into the hotel because they had to stay outside. Security guards made sure that only guests came in, so the band would have their privacy and peace. She knew how the fans felt watching her go in... She just hoped that some of them would one day be as lucky as her, and get as near to the boys as she would be today.

"What are you thinking, girl?" she thought to herself. Nothing even happened so far and maybe she wouldn't even get a glimpse of one of the boys, if they stayed in their rooms all day long! Well, maybe positive thinking was the key to success today!

Molly went straight to the reception desk to get the keys to her room. The "Hyatt" was a very expensive hotel and under normal circumstances she would have had to pay a lot more than she did. But fortunately her best friend's dad was the manager of the hotel and he had taken a room for both his daughter and Molly for two days and nights. Of course he had to pay less for it, that's why Molly could save a lot of money.

The girls didn't have to beg for too long for this favor. Mr. Schall knew Molly well enough to know she wouldn't freak out when seeing the Backstreet Boys. His daughter Sarah wasn't a fan, but she liked the BSB's music very much and wanted to join Molly in this little adventure. Sarah thought that Brian was really cool and meeting him would be great! But she wasn't here now, she would arrive at the hotel later. The girls had arranged to meet at 1pm in the hotel's restaurant for lunch.

After Molly was given the keys she made her way up to room 201, which would be her "home" for the next 48 hours. She knew - thanks to Mr. Schall - that the Backstreet Boys wouldn't arrive until 11am, which meant she had one and a half hours left to check out her room and every corner of the hotel, before she started her search for the band. She knew that they had taken every room on the fifth floor for themselves and their crew, and the elevator didn't stop at that floor anymore as long as the band was there. Only the band and crew, security and hotel staff knew how to stop the elevator on fifth floor.

Molly's and Sarah's room was on the third floor. It was...BIG! Although Molly had often been to the hotel with Sarah, she had not seen many rooms yet. They had usually hung out in the restaurant, at the bar or the pool. So when she stepped into her room now, a wide grin spread across her face and she whispered: "Wow!" She knew already that she could get used to that...

It was 10:50am. Molly sat in a comfy chair in the lobby of the Hyatt, her eyes fixed to the reception desk. Whatever entrance the band used to get into the hotel, they would have to get their keys here. Molly made sure that see could see everything that was going on, but that she wouldn't be seen. Sarah and her had decided not to act like fans or to just go over to the Boys and ask for an autograph or a picture. They wanted to see what they were really like in private. With all the cameras off and no business stuff to do.

Half an hour later it was SHOW-TIME! Molly first saw Howie and Brian walk over to the reception to get their keys - and she almost forgot breathing. Her mind went blank as an unconscious smile crept upon her face.

She couldn't hear a word of what they were talking about, but suddenly Brian laughed out loud and Howie made a frown. Molly felt a wave of sweet happiness hit her, as Brian's laughter filled the room, although she hadn't yet realized what was actually going on. That she could walk over and really talk to them, if she wanted to. Still laughing Brian took his bag and walked away. Then Kevin appeared with Donna Wright, the band's manager that Molly knew from pictures. (Author's note *grin*: I know that the Boys had already changed management at that time, but oh well...I hadn't thought of it while I had been writing and it's only fiction anyway!) Donna talked to the two guys, who nodded their heads and then also walked away. Donna talked to the woman at the reception desk then, signed some papers and got a lot of keys.

"Oh no", Molly thought. "Does that mean the other guys won't come themselves?!" She had hoped she would see her fave Backstreet "Boy" AJ at least from a distance. And now not even Nick showed up...

She kept waiting in the lobby for a few more minutes, but nothing happened except for a business man to leave his key. Molly wondered what to do next. Just before she decided to go back to her room, Kevin suddenly stood at the reception again. He wrote something down, handed it to the woman and went back towards the elevators. As soon as he disappeared around the corner Molly jumped up and followed him, quickly but discreetly. She was quick enough to see him getting into an elevator, so she went a bit faster. When she arrived, the elevator door was about to close. Kevin reacted and kept the door open for her with a smile. He looked so good, dressed in black, with his tan skin, his piercing green eyes and wide shoulders. Molly stepped in, her heart beating triple-time!

"What now?!" she thought. "Damn, next time think first before you act!"

"Thank you", she said - in German. She saw the surprised expression in his eyes and that was exactly what she wanted. Now he was thinking that she didn't know who he was.

Kevin just flashed her a smile. Molly then said: "Haben sie die ganzen Fans draußen gesehen - ziemlich beeindruckend!"

"Oh, I'm sorry, I don't speak German", Kevin informed her. His voice deep and soft made her feel totally comfortable around him.

Molly put on a face as if to say "Oh - I didn't know that!" and repeated in English what she had said: "I asked if you've seen all those fans outside - quite impressive, huh?!"

"Yeah,...I've seen 'em. They're great!"

Molly wrinkled her eye-brows. "Surprising answer", she kept up her act. "Usually guests feel disturbed by all the screaming and singing."

Kevin, slightly irritated, was thinking about something to say to that, but the elevator stopped on Molly's floor.

"Have a nice stay", she said and got out. She waved him good-bye as the door closed. Kevin had a grin on his face...

AJ and Nick had arrived at the hotel a few minutes later than the rest of the guys. They had entered the hotel through the underground car park in a black jeep with shaded window panes. All the fans were still screaming outside for them because they knew that only the BSB could have been sitting in that car.

Nick was searching for his mobile phone in his bag, while they walked towards the elevator. When they came nearer AJ saw a girl getting into the elevator, but the door already closed. He only saw her suddenly smile at someone or something, 'til she disappeared out of sight.

"Hey Frack man, you've seen that girl?" he asked Nick.

"Uh, what?" Nick still didn't find that mobile phone.

"Forget it", AJ sighed.

"What a smile", he thought to himself.
