Chapter 3
A week later I was sitting on the pier at the beach watching Nick on the shore line as he threw rocks into the crashing waves. The sun was starting to set below the horizon, and the taste and smell of salt was in the air. I became so lost in this beautiful seen that I didn't hear the footsteps coming down the pier toward where I sat.
"Excuse me miss." I turned around and saw Nick standing next to me. He could see me. I stood up quickly. As he looked at me his eyes grew wide with realization.
Nick- "You....You were the girl in my hospital room. You-."
Me- "Excuse me, I have to go."
Nick- "No, wait please. Why were you in my room, and you were singing a Backstreet Boys song, our song. You have a great voice."
Me- "Thank you Nick." I caught myself at saying that.
Nick- "How did you know my name?" I started to think of a good excuse.
Me- "I ummm....... I saw your medical chart, it had your name on it.
Nick- "Well, that's not fair. You know my name but I don't know your's."
Me- "It's Kimberly." He put his hand out.
Nick- "Nice to meet you, whoever you are." I looked at his hand, hesitant to take it.
Nick- "It's just a hand, I don't bite you know." Very slowly, I slipped my hand into his and shook it. I felt my heart race at his touch.
Nick- "Please, tell me why you were in my room. I really want to know."
Me- "Not now, I really have to go." I tried to leave but he gently grabbed my arm.
Nick- "Wait, when will I see you again?"
Me- "Tomorrow, I'll come to you."
Nick- "Where? What time?" But I got away from him and ran. When I was sure he couldn't see me, I returned to heaven. I found David waiting for me.
David- "Your falling in love with him. The Elder Women saw you. Your heart is filling up with feelings for a human." I sighed in defeat.
Me- "I guess I am. I didn't want to believe it, but after touching him, I knew it was true."
David- "Do you recall anything from your-."
Me- "David, you know my story. I was a still born baby, so I never experienced real life. I was brought here to be a guardian angel for teenagers. That's the only reason I aged when I was brought here. I've watched these human's touch, kiss and hug, whatever that really means, but I've never done it before. This is the only life I've ever known." At that point I looked down on Nick. He was sitting on his pool deck, lost in thought.
Elder Women- "Read his thoughts child." I concentrated on Nick for a second.
Me- "He keeps asking himself the same question over and over again."
David- "Which is?"
Me- "Who is she and, why was she in my room." David sighed.
David- "Well, you've defiantly perked his interest."
Me- "I don't think so, he' s just curious."
David- "And your still in denial. You do realize that you only have 5 weeks left. If I were you I would start to wake up and smell the hour glass burning away."
The two of them vanished as I watched Nick get ready for bed. The next day should prove to be very interesting, I thought to myself.
The next morning I watched as Nick got up showered, dressed and went back to the pier. He sat on the spot that we had met at yesterday and waited there for close to 3 hours. I guessed he was waiting on me. I appeared far enough away so he couldn't see, that way he would think I was merely walking down the beach. As I neared the pier, he spotted me, got up and ran up to me.
Nick- "Thought you forgot about me."
Me- "No, I wouldn't do that."
Nick- "Well, do you want to go for a walk or sit down?" I thought for a second.
Me- "We'd better sit, cause what I'm about to tell you, you need to sit to hear it." We both sat down on the shore line and stared out at the waves.
Nick- "So, are you gonna tell me who you are?" I took a deep breath.
Me- "Nick, if I tell you, your not going to believe me, but it is the truth."
Nick- "Ok, so what is it?"
Me- "The reason I was in your room was because I have been watching you since the day you were born." He gave me the most confused look.
Me- "I'm your guardian angel."
Nick- "Ok, I'm out of here. You know I have enough on my mind without having to worry about obsessed fans that stalk me." He got up to leave but I stopped him.
Me- "Look I'm not going to beg you to believe me, but I can prove it."
Nick- "Well, proof is an excellent concept. How?"
Me- "I was there the night your girlfriend was Jessica was killed by a jealous fan. The bullet passed right through her and hit you and that's why your wearing that." I pointed to the bandage under his shirt.
Me- "Your friend Brian told you that he didn't see any one run out of your hospital room. That's because no one else can see me but you. I can read your thoughts. You won't admit to anyone the real reason you canceled the concerts. You use your injury as an excuse. But the reason you don't want to go back is because your afraid that the next fan of yours that gets jealous....Well, the bullet might hit you next time. And you cared a lot for Jessica, your still messed up inside about her. You never loved her but she meant a lot to you." He was looking at me in shock.
Nick- "This is too weird. But how is that I can see you, but no one else can?"
Me- "There is a reason, but I can't tell you that right now."
Nick- "Well, this explains your fair complexion and faded eye color... But your still beautifuL." I smiled at him.
Me- "Thank you...Do you wanna walk for a while."
Nick- "Sure."
We spent 2 and a half hours walking on the shore line just talking. He asked me a lot of questions, like what was it like to die, and what was heaven like. I answered all his questions and soon we found ourselves back at his house.
Me- "Well, it's time for you to have dinner with the rest of the boys and it's time for me to go."
Nick- "Where do you go from here?"
Me- " To a place where I can continue to watch over you."
Nick- "Will I be able to see you?"
Me- "Not unless I want you to. Just because you can physically see me, doesn't mean I'm not your guardian angel anymore."
Nick- "Well, when can I see you again?"
Me- "I'll always be near, I may pop up every now and then. And if you need me, just call." He smiled at me, that beautiful smile.
Nick- "Can I ask you one more question before you go?"
Me- "You know you can ask me anything."
Nick- "Are human's allowed to hug angel's?" The question threw me into a slight panic.
Me- "I think so, but there is one little problem."
Nick- "What's that?"
Me- "How, exactly, is it done?" He smiled at me questioningly.
Nick- "You mean you've never hugged anyone before?"
Me- "No, I've seen it done of course, but never experienced it before." Again he smiled, only this time in a thoughtful way.
Nick- "Let me show you. Come here." I stepped up to him.
Nick- "Hold your arms out in front of you." I did what he said.
Nick- "Now put both your arms around me."
Me- "Where do I put my hands?" He laughed a little.
Nick- "Anywhere on my back is fine." Hesitantly, I put my arms around him as he did the same to me.
Nick- "Now, there's one last thing."
Me- "What?"
Nick- "Relax a little." After a second I suddenly realized how comfortable I felt in this position. I let my muscles relax, and let his strength support my weight. A great warmth swept over me like a tide, with a wind that carried me to the safe shores of his embrace. I found myself lying my head on his shoulder, letting the heat from his body seep through my immortal skin.
Nick- "Are you ok?"
Me- "Mm Hmm." I shut my eyes as I felt one of his hands running up and down my back. I only wished I could stay like this forever. Or at least for the next five weeks.
Nick- "I don't wanna let go." Just then I got a telepathic message from heaven. I pulled away.
Me- "But we have to, you have promises to keep and so do I." I unwillingly let go of him.
Nick- "So, I'll see you again soon right?"
Me- "You will." He smiled at me again.
Nick- "Goodbye, Kimberly."
Me- "Bye Nick." With that he went into the house and I returned to heaven.
David- "So, how did it feel?"
Me- "What?"
David- "To hug someone." I thought for a second, then smiled at him.
Me- "Like heaven." We both started laughing.
