Asteroids are basically clumps of rock that are floating through space. Most astronomers today believe that the asteroids are the left over remnants of the formation of planets. Most of the asteroids in our solar system lie Mars and Jupiter. There are about 7 000 known asteroids in the Belt, and there are probably hundreds of thousands more not even visible to Earth.
The largest discovered so far is called Ceres. It is approximately 568 miles in diameter.
Meteors are asteroids, with on big difference, they strike celestial bodies (planets and moons). A meteor is the asteroid itself as it strikes the surface of the planet or moon. A meteorite is a piece of that meteor that is blown off onto the surface of the planet/moon.
