EMDs first 1500 hp yard switcher came out in 1966. By the time production
stopped in 1974, over 800 of these had been sold. The popular switcher
is still spotted working for major railroads in 2000.
Waycross, Ga; February 1999.
The small maintenance shop in Waycross always yield some pleasant surprises.
The engine of unknown ownership exhibits the typical features of a SW1500:
the 2 stacks, the flat roof, the grille openings on top of the roof and
headlight assembly.
Port St Joe, Fl; April 1998.
Two GP15T and 5 SW1500 were the typical consist of the coal train on
the Appalachicola Northern. One of the last runs of the Seminole coal train
to River Junction shows the switchers equipped with Flexicoil trucks for
a smoother ride. Once the coal train disappeared, AN had no trouble finding
buyers for these workhorses. Helms ended up getting 717 and 718.

Another short line in the Southeast is making the best out of the flexicoil
truck equipped SW1500. The Chattahoochee Industrial Railroad owns 2 units.
