LYON "FRET"

LYON-PERRACHE; November 2001.
North of the passenger train station, is the bridge over the Soane River and the tunnel under Fourviere Hill; both are multiple tracks. The maze of switches (all remote at the greatest relief of all the conductors!!!!) are to bring passenger trains into the station. In the earlier seventies, this was the only major train station for the city. This engine now relegated to switching services around the station was the star of  that era as it had just beaten world speed records between Paris and Lyon. It was in essence a precurssor of the high speed trains of today.

The passenger station also see freight trains. The junction with tracks heading south is just west of the station. This autorack is heading to the main freight yard south of the city. This engine is also a former passenger train engine which served mainly in the late seventies early eighties.

A few minutes later, a freight train once again pulled by a veteran of the passenger service, stops right behind the autorack train.
