Curtiss JN-6H

This JN variant delivered to the US Army was built in several sub-variants specialized for various training functions. The JN-6HB was designed as a single-control bomber trainer. The JN-6HG-1 as a dual-control trainer, and JN-6HG-2 a single-control gunnery trainer. The JN-6HO as a single-control observation trainer and JN-6HP a single-control pursuit [fighter] trainer. Aside from the sub-variants the JN-6H was equipped with a Hispano-Suzia 180 horsepower engine. The wing configuration reverted back to ailerons on both the upper and lower wings.

The final iteration of the JN series was the JNS, or Standard Jenny. As part of the post-war economy drive, the U.S. Army modernized the Jenny rather than purchasing new designs. The task was given to U.S. Army Service Depots, which upgraded many of the earlier versions until 1926. The revised aircraft all used Wright 180-horsepower (134-kilowatt) Hispano-Suiza engines and were re-designated JNS (for JN Standardized). Between 200 and 300 JNS trainers were completed. This variant had one more reversion, once again, to ailerons on the top wing only. In 1927 all JNS types were declared obsolete and retired from service.
