On January 27 2004, I received impossibly unverifiable information about an impending hunger strike at Florida State Prison in Q-Wing (was X-Wing in 1999) where Frank Valdes' life ended. This wing holds men who are considered the 'worst of the worst', and, because the collective 'we' have been told they are dangerous and unimportant, we have ignored the conditions they live in. Not a very Godly attitude I admit, but hopefully one we will change as we become enlightened.

Although I can not verify the upcoming hunger strike as of yet, I have decided to report the reasons that the men in Q-Wing listed for the strike. These words came directly from the men in Q-WING AT FLORIDA STATE PRISON:
NOTE FROM FSP STRIKERS
On February the first 2004, the inmates being held on FSP's notorious Q-Wing will commence a hunger strike.
After talking to some of the other guys here we have come to the conclusion that we have to do something drastic in order to draw attention to the abuse of power/rules.
A hunger strike is probably one of the only things we can do, so starting on the 1st of February we will stop eating.

KNOW THIS ONE FACT: If a hunger strike happens there are important reasons. Decent food is scarce in there, punishment is severe, and for a person in prison to refuse to eat means they are up against the wall and there are serious issues they have to present.
I know from the DoC's historical performances with these matters, that, if the strike happens, word will probably leak to the press, who will call the warden or Tallahassee, who will say the standard, "It's just trouble makers and we've got the situation under control." The press either never finds out (or never reports) the reasons why inmates, with no reason to hope for a winning situation, would put themselves on the line by 'bucking the system'.
Even though the issues are valid, the prisoners never have a victorious conclusion because the Florida DoC will eventually shove a tube down their throat and force feed them. Then they'll quietly, under cover of law, punish them. To set an example for the others who might 'get ideas in their heads', those who are named as the 'ringleaders' will be isolated and/or be beaten.
When the conditions do not improve as a result of the strike, the tension will build past human endurance until a riot happens. All history shows that major improvements in prison are almost invariable the result of riots. Why wait that long? Let's hear their complaints and urge the administration to investigate and do something about whatever is wrong before tragedy happens. Kay Lee
