Preparation of Dinosaur Fossils

Creater of this web site working on removing the matrix (the rock surrounding the fossil ) from the mandable of a
Hadrasaur (Edmontosaurus). Edmontosaurus was up to  42 feet in length and lived during the
Cretaceous (65 to 144 million years ago) in Wyoming (Lance Creek Formation).

In this photograph the plaster cast is being trimed back to  provide better access to the fossil. Surrouding
the cast are the tools being used to remove the matrix. These include exacto knifes and brushes. The fossil
is left in the plaster cast. This cast supports the fossil during the cleaning project.

The matrix is slowly and carefully removed bit by bit, until all that is left is the fossil.
