Priscilla's Story

...This is a true story from one of my past experiences in life. One evening, My, at that time boyfriend, and myself. were having a few beers at a local biker tavern. This was in 1986. A man there had a motorcycle part that my friend needed. sooo, we went to the man's home to get the part.

While there, I observed a very thin Great Dane tied under a tree on a 5 foot chain with no food or water. There were feces, flies, and nothing but dirt to lay on for the poor thing.

I inquired to the man about this dog. He said that it belonged to his wife and that I would need to speak to her on the matter. I went inside to ask if I could buy the dog from her. She flat out said NO! When I inquired why that she did not want to sell the dog, her explanation horrified me.

She had acquired the dog with intentions of breeding and selling AKC registered puppies, The dog had in fact had a litter, but all the puppies died. Her punishment to the dog was to let it starve to death only giving it water once a day to prolong it's suffering. She felt that the dog had cost her money and that she could do what she pleased to her own property and for me to mind my own buisiness.

I went back outside and pleaded with her husband. I guess that I must have said something to reach his feelings. He told us to come back in one hour to take the dog, no charge. His wife was going somewhere and we could get the dog without a fight. Which is exactly what we did.

We took the dog to the home of my employer for help. I didn't have enough money for vet bills and did not want to get involved in a legal battle in fear of the dog being returned to the owner. I didn't know anything about reporting animal abuse then.

She called a vet to come to her house that evening. He said that the dog was knocking on death's door, but he would do everything he could to save her. Which he did. The dog lived a very pampered and happy existence in her new home.

You see, My employer owned a 3.5 million dollar horse farm in Ocala which consisted of 100 fenced acres. At the least, this story did have a happy ending. But you can be certain that many more than not, do not.
