USS MISSOURI BB 63 cruising off the mouth of Wonson harbor, North Korea. It was always nice to see a battle wagon that close, because all the North Korean gunners took the day off. They had no desire to tangle with the big guns of a battle ship. What was amazing was that one could actually see the 16 inch projectiles as they left the guns made a large arc and hit somewhere on a mountain side.
On October 21, 1952, while providing a smoke screen for two South Korean mine sweepers, the Lewis was struck by shore fire. A fifty percent loss of power left the Lewis in a vulnerable position. The USS Naifeh DE 352 then laid a smoke screen between the Lewis and the shore batteries allowing time to get out of gun range before any more damage resulted.
