Here are the chord substitutions that I use to play the 1955 Erroll Garner standard Misty. I play the tune in a moderate 4/4 tempo in the key of "E". Each box below represents one bar. The chord fingerings I use (in a Standard tuning) are as follows: Emaj7 = 022444; Bm9 = 7x7779; E7b9 = 0x6767; Amaj7 = 5x665x; A6 = 5x465x; Am7 = 5x5555; D9 = x54555; Emaj9 = 0x4444; C#m7 = x4245x; F#m7 = 2x2222; B7b9 = x2121x; G#7#5 = 4x455x; C#9 = x43444; F#7#5 = 2x233x; B9 = x21222; F7#9 = 13x244; D7 = x5453x; Bm7 = 7x7777; E9 = 0x6777; Bb7 = 6x67xx; A#m7 = 6x6666; D#9 = x65666; F#13 = 2x2344; G#m7 = 4x4444; and G7 = 3x34xx. For variation, try substituting the "A#7#9" [68x799] or "E13b9" [0x6769] chords for the "E7b9" chord in the second bar of the A section. In the last two bars of the A section try substituting the "G#7-C#7-F#7-B7", "G#m7-C#7-F#m7-B7", or "E6/9-G13-F#m9-F7#9" sequences. In the last two bars of the B section try substituting the "G#m7-C#7b9-F#m11-B7b9" or "F#m7-B7b9-B9-F7#9" progressions. Lastly, many arrangements substitute the "G#m7" chord for the "Emaj9" chord in the fifth bar on the A section.
