Sleigh Ride

Here are the chord substitutions I use for the 1950 Leroy Anderson Christmas standard Sleigh Ride. Anderson says he wrote the music during a heat wave in August 1948. Two years later Mitchell Parish added the lyrics. The song was first performed and popularized by Arthur Fiedler and The Boston Pops Orchestra. This song is played in a moderately bright 4/4 tempo. The A Section of the song repeats the standard (I-vi-ii-V) progression eight times giving more than ample opportunity to practice chord substitution. I like to substitute the following progression for the third and fourth bars of the A section: "E-G13-F#13-F13". Also, try substituting the following progression for the seventh and eighth bars of the A Section: "E-Gmaj7-Cmaj7-B7". For more substitution ideas, refer to the MoneyChords lesson Jazz/Standard Turnarounds.
