Las Vegas, Nev. --On March 25, 2000, Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev., made history as they hosted the first ever Monster Jam World Finals pay per view event. The event was broascast live to tape on pay per view, iNDEMAND, and Dish Network, Sunday, March 26, 2000 at 5:30pm and 8:00pm.
Fans who ordered the event were nothing more than stunned, as the bad boys of racing let loose in the Nevada night air. Taking to the track was an all-star line up choosen by points and popluar demand in the Wrenchead.com Pick Six Sweepstakes: Goldberg, WCW Nitro Machine, Bulldozer, Predator, Sudden Impact, Wrenchead, nWo, Sting, Airborne Ranger, Madusa, Gunslinger, Reptoid, King Krunch, Avenger, Prowler, and the legendary Grave Digger.
The event had everything; pageantry, fireworks, superstars and suspence. The course was different from anything PACE Motor Sports and the United States Hot Rod Association had ever built before and the floor was a graveyard of cars, trucks, and even semi trailers. Not one of which was recognizable by the end of the event. The starting was actully outside of the stadium. Each truck had it's own "Wrenchead" alley tom use as an entrance to the stadium, allowing trucks to reach speeds of over 55 MPH on the Pace straightway, which ran theentire length of the stadium. The trucks then had to slow down, execute a perfect 180-degree turn, and line up to jump six crushed cars. Only the strong would survive this technical and demanding course.
Freestyle was nothing less than spectacular as the drivers made use of every inch of the track and it's obstacles. Rookie driver and the only female in the feild, Madusa. rolled her silver, blue, and red truck for the first time all year as she hit one of the progressive jumps (car, box van, car), caught the back wheels and ended up hitting one of the Motorcross jumps whick pushed the machine over.
Lyle Hancock, piloting the Wrenchead.com machine, made the most impressive move. Already missing his hood from a tangle with a dumpster during the racing segment of the event, Hancock used almost every jump on the feild making a mess of the track. For his finale, Hancock lined up the Wrenchhead machine in the dead center of the track. Everyone thought he was going to try a wheelie from a dead stop, but instead sly Lyle put the truck in reverse and headed for a freestyle landing ramp that had a semi trailer as part of the anchor for the base. Hancock hit the trailer, the tires hooked up and launched himself in reverse, straight up into the air. Easily the most impresive single move of the night.
Goldbergs's freestyle run was cut short by a crash and roll that caused one wheel to snap off the axle and two others to dangle as if on hinges. However, fan favorite Grave Digger and legandary driver Dennis had something to say about the freestyle trophy. Dennis wanted to average early departure from the racing bracket, as he was defeated in round two by Scott Stephens and King Krunch. In typical Digger style, Anderson tore up what remained of the course with a wide-open throttle. About a minute into the run however, he lost the rear steering of digger seven and had limited capabilities to finish his run. He lined up with the freestyle landing ramp(that Hancock had earlier run backwards) and hit the gas. Doing a remarkable job of keeping control of Digger, whose rear wheels were a good three to five feet to the right of the front wheels, Anderson hit the jump, landed, and almost saved the machine from rolling over but finally had to succumb to gravity. For his effort, Anderson scored a perfect 40 from the fans judging from the stands, a fitting end to the biggest World Finalscever. Meets and Goldberg finished second and Hancock in wrenchhead finished third.
There was also a Freestyle Motocross competition, titled the Yahoo! Sports "Duel in the Desert" between Metal Mulisha leader Brian Deegan and the "Godfather of Freestlye", Mike Metzger. Degan trailed the entire night as Metger showed why he was the "Godfather" throwing out sick tricks and huge whips during each of his three runs. Deegan executed a huge superman seat-grab and then pulled out his signature "Mulisha Air" in the final round, but it wasn't enought. Metzger sealed the deal when his "McMetz" (a double saran-wrap) brought the crowd to its feet.
