Chapter Ten

Felicia:

I was waiting for Nick to get home. I wanted to tell him my news and couldn’t wait to tell him. Steph and I had already graduated that Monday. I called Nick and told him and he was cool with it.

I picked up the phone and dialed his number for the hundredth time that afternoon. This time I actually got an answer.

"Hello?" I head Nick’s voice.

"Hey Nicky! Are ya glad to be home?"

"Oh yeah, most definitely! Damn girl, did you need me or something?"

"Huh?" I was a little confused.

"I’m looking at my caller ID right now and you’ve called me like every hour just about. I told you my flight got in at 4:30." He laughed.

"I know, but I was impatient."

"I’d say so. So, what’s this news you gotta tell me? I’ve been anticipating it all day."

"Ok, well you gotta wait a little longer. I wanna tell you in person. I’ll be there in 15 minutes."

"Ok, I’ll be waiting, impatiently."

"See ya."

"Bye."

I hung up, got my shoes, keys, and phone and ran to my car. I drove to Nick’s house and got there in 15 minutes. I rang the doorbell. A minute later, Nick opened the door and let me in. We went into the living room and sat on his couch.

"So, tell me this news."

"Ok, well after graduation and everything. This guy from this dance school came up to me and offered me a job, to teach dancing. I thought about it and did a little research and decided to take the job."

"That’s great! What’s the place?"

"Richard’s school of pop dancing."

"Never heard of it, but it sounds interesting."

"Well, the thing about it is it’s in New York."

"What?! You’re gonna move all the way up there?!"

"Yeah, I’m gonna try it, see how I like it and all that. Nick, if you’re worried about us not being friends anymore, don’t. We’ll always be friends no matter what. I’ll call you every week and stuff."

"Ok, you better. When do you leave?"

"In two weeks."

"Oh wow, that soon?"

"Yeah, I know. I’m pretty much packed. But you can help me finish if you want."

"Of course I want to." He had a huge smile on his face and I just hit him in the arm.

"What was that for?"

"Just felt like hitting you. I haven’t in a month. I missed it."

"Oh, well what are you going to do when you go to New York?"

"I’ll survive some how. Anyway, enough talk about New York. Do you have cards?"

"Yeah, hold on." He left the room and came back with a deck of cards in his hand.

"Wanna play?" I asked, as I sat on the floor, shuffling the cards.

"Nah, I gotta make a few phone calls."

"Alright, I’ll play solitaire for a while. You can join me anytime you want."

"Ok, I’ll keep that in mind." He walked into the kitchen and I started playing a game of solitaire.

Nick:

I went into the kitchen and sat on the stool at the island in the middle of the kitchen. The phone was next to me. I wanted to call Brian, because he could help. I didn’t want Felicia to go, just because she was on of my closest friends and I had no idea how long she’d be gone or when the next time I’d see her again. I knew she had to go, to grow more in her field and life in general. But for some reason, deep down I really didn’t want her to leave.

I picked up the phone and dialed Brian’s number.

"Hello?" He answered.

"Hey B, it’s Nick."

"Hey Nick. We just got in; you miss me that much?" He laughed.

"Ha, funny Brian. Nah, I just needed someone to talk to."

"Oh, well what’s up?"

"Felicia is moving to New York?"

"What?! When?"

"In two weeks to go teach at this school up there. She did research and said it seems really good."

"Well, that’s great. Tell her congratulations from me."

"Ok"

"Wait, aren’t you happy for her?"

"Of course I am, but I’m afraid that I won’t see her again. I mean, she’s now one of my closest friends."

"Oh, that’s what you’re worried about. Don’t be, Nick. You guys will always be friends."

"I guess you’re right. It’s just weird, that’s all."

"I know, but it’s probably a little scary for her. Just spend the next week working on your friendship and making it stronger."

"Ok, I’ll do that. Thanks Bri."

"No prob, Frack. Gotta go, talk to you later."

"Alright, Bye B."

"Bye."

I hung up the phone and went back into the living room. I heard music playing and saw Felicia sitting on the floor, playing solitaire and jamming to the music.

"What are you listening to?" She jumped a little when I said that. "Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you."

"It’s ok. Um, Westlife. It was too quiet."

"Oh, so you just think you can use my CD player all you want?"

"Yeah, actually I do." She just grinned at me, innocently.

"Right, whatever. What’s the name of the song?"

"Loneliness knows me by name."

"Nice."

"I know, isn’t it? Wanna play?"

"Yeah sure." I sat down on the floor with her.

"What would you like to play?"

"Spades."

"You need 4 people for that dummy."

"Fine then, Rummy."

"Ok."

She dealt the cards and we started playing. The next song came on and I had no clue what it was.

"What’s this song?"

"Everything you so, something like that."

"Cool."

"Yeah, oh I can do that piano part!" She exclaimed, and I just laughed at her.

"Oh, really? Well, then show me."

"Alright." She got up and walked over to the piano. She found the right keys and played the piano solo part of that song and she’s right, she can play it very good too.

"Wow, you can play really good. Where’d you learn to play?"

"Myself. I taught myself, played by ear."

"That’s awesome."

"Thanks. Anyway, let’s finish this game."

"Ok."

We played Rummy for 2 hours. It was fun and funny. The rest of the day we talked, watched TV and ordered pizza, and ate. Then she went home. The rest of the week went by fairly fast. Felicia had to work most of it and the guys and I had some photo shoots to go to. But that Friday I made a date with Felicia to help her finish packing all day.

Friday came and I woke up at 7:00am. I got in the shower and 10 minutes later, got out, and put my clothes on. I wore black jeans and an old T-shirt. I put my shoes on, grabbed my keys and left the house, locking the door. I jumped into my car and drove to Felicia’s. 15 minutes later I got there. I walked to her door, and knocked. 5 minutes later I heard her unlock the door and open it.

"Took you long enough." I teased as I walked in.

"Sorry, I just got out of the shower when you knocked. I got dresses as fast as I could."

"I know. Damn girl, you already have a lot packed." I looked around her apartment and there were boxes everywhere.

"Yeah, but there’s a hell of a lot more stuff that needs to be packed still. I don’t even know why I have so much shit."

"You’re a girl that’s why."

"Gee, thanks for clearing that up" She laughed.

"No prob. When are the movers coming?"

"Monday. It’ll take about a week for all of it to get there."

"Cool. You’re still staying with me, right?"

"Yep, except for Wednesday. Because I’m gonna hand with Steph before I go."

"That’s fine. Anyway, let’s get started. Where do you want me to start?"

"Um, the kitchen. If you don’t mind."

"Nope, that’s fine."

"Ok, there’s newspapers and boxes in there. I’ll be in the bathroom if you need me."

"Ok." I went into the kitchen and started packing. I started packing her dishes and all the breakable stuff. I was almost finished with that, when Felicia called me.

"Nick, could you come here real quick?" She yelled. I went into the bathroom, but she wasn’t in there.

"Where’s here?" I called.

"The living room." I went in there and saw her hanging from her really tall bookcase.

"Ok, I’m not even going to ask." I laughed.

"I was on the stepladder, getting the things off the top shelf of the bookcase, when it tipped, and I fell and I’m stuck."

"Why didn’t you just jump down?"

"Because there are boxes under me, you idiot."

"Ok, geez. It was just a question." I walked over to her and grabbed her. She let go and I put her down on the floor.

"Well, thanks for helping me down. You can go back to work."

"Ok, don’t fall off anything else, ok?"

"Don’t worry, I won’t."

I went back into the kitchen and continued to pack. I was almost done with everything when someone knocked on the door.

"Nick, can you please get that?" Felicia called.

"Yeah, sure." I yelled back. I went into the living room and opened the door. I saw a brown haired, middle aged woman standing there.

"Can I help you?" I asked.

"Maybe, does a Felicia Roberts live here?"

"She does. Come in and I’ll get her."

"Thank you." The woman stayed near the door while I went to get Felicia.

"Felicia, where are you?"

"In my room, the closet."

I went in there and saw her folding clothes.

"It’s for you. Some woman."

"Oh, ok. Thanks." We both went into the living room and the woman smiled.

Felicia:

I looked at the woman standing by the door and she looked vaguely familiar.

"I’ll be in the kitchen if you need me." Nick said, walking into the kitchen.

"Can I help you?" I asked.

"Maybe."

"Ok, with what?"

"Do you know who I am?"

I was confused; I had no clue who this woman was.

"No, I don’t think so."

"Oh, well Felicia, I’m Melinda Roberts, I’m your mother."

Ok, that was a total shocker. What did she want? Why come into my life now? I didn’t know what to say.

"Are you going to say anything?"

"Um, what do I say to the woman who put me into an orphanage because she and my father couldn’t ‘handle’ me anymore?!"

"I guess nothing. But you could say something."

"I don’t want to say anything. I shouldn’t have to. Is there something you wanted?"

"Yeah, I want my daughter back."

"Well, I’m sorry you’re 9 years too late. I’m not the same person you gave up. I don’t need you in my life anymore."

"Oh, I guess I deserve that."

"You guess? What the hell?! Do you want me to forgive you just like that, for giving me up?! I don’t think so."

I got up and started walking to the kitchen.

"Fine, if you won’t talk to me. Talk to you father."

"No, I’m not going to talk to either of you."

"Do you even want to know why I’m here?"

"I knew there was a reason you’re here."

"Felicia, you have a brother and he’s very sick and he needs your help."

Ding another total shocker! I have a brother? Go figure.

"My help? Why the hell could he possibly need my help?"

"Because you could match his bone marrow."

"Look, I don’t want to sound heartless, because I’m not. Unlike some people I know. But I’m not going to get into that. But I’m moving to New York in a week, I don’t have time. I’m sorry."

"Oh, I guess that’s why all the boxes are here. I thought it was your boyfriend’s stuff."

"Nick? My boyfriend, no. He’s just one of my best friends. And he’s helping me move."

"Is it more important to move to New York than to help your brother?"

"Yes, as a matter of fact it is. Up until now I didn’t know I even had a brother. I mean, his parents I don’t even consider to be mine anymore, so he’s not really my brother. This job is really important to me at the moment. I’m sorry."

"I can’t believe you pick a job over your own brother."

"Melinda, don’t even think of making me feel guilty! You don’t have the right! I’m no longer part of your or Tom’s life anymore. That ended the day you gave me up."

"I guess so."

"Yeah, well I have to finish packing. You know where the door is, so you can leave. Goodbye." I turned and walked into the kitchen. Nick was still packing things. I sat on the chair and put my hands over my face.

"Felicia, are you ok?" Nick asked. I took my hands away from my face and was met with his blue eyes.

"Maybe, you wanna know who that was?"

"Who?"

"My mother." His eyes went wide.

"What?!"

"That’s what I said. She just wanted me for my bone marrow. I supposedly have a little brother and he’s sick. I’d do it, but that was the only reason they came back. And I just don’t care anymore."

"I know. That shouldn’t have even been a reason to ask you to go back into their lives."

"Yeah, that’s what I told her. Oh well, she’s gone. Let’s not worry about that anymore. I’m going to go finish packing my room."

"Ok, I’m almost done here, and I’ll help you when I’m finished."

"Ok, thanks Nick."

I got up and went into my room. I started packing again. Trying not to think about what happened a few minutes earlier.

The rest of the day Nick and I packed and packed, and packed. We almost finished everything, except two closets. It was abut 11:45 when we decided to stop for the night.

The rest of the weekend went by fast and we finished packing by Sunday afternoon...
