Biography

Profession: Independent Grocer 1969 +/-



Leo was born in March of 1908 in the family home at 12257 S. Normal Ave. Chicago. He attended Assumption B.V.M. grade school at 122nd street and Parnel and mentioned at one time that he had worked as a lamplighter (lighting the gas street lights). After completing grade school, he attended Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago for two years. During the 1920s it is believed that he had worked for his uncle Pete at Adent's Coal & Ice Company along with his father on 119th street and Halsted before going to work for Marshal Field & Co. in the fabric department. Sometime in the early 1930s Leo started his first career as an independent grocer at the NW corner of 123rd. street and Parnel and later after completing over 40 years of business at the SW corner of 123rd. and Normal ave. he retired and moved to Port Richey, Florida.

While in Port Richey, Leo worked for Beale's Department Store and retired again from there after 20 years service. By this time Leo being close to 90 years old moved with his family to share a townhouse with his daughter Maryanne in Highland, Indiana.

In November of 2000 Leo died peacefully in bed at home of pneumonia. He was 92.
