Ghillie Suits

A ghillie suit is one of a sniper's most valuable pieces of equipment. Without it he would be in constant risk of discovery. The ghillie suit gives a sniper the advantage that is crucial to him making the kill. It lets him get in range of the target, yet stay nearly invisible. Without this edge the sniper would have a much harder task to accomplish. For this reason a ghillie suit is nearly as important to a snipers success as his rifle.

The suit is supposed to completely "blend" into the environment, not just imitate it. This is why the ghillie looks so much different than any other camouflage. The suit it itself is mearly a comouflage base. The strips that hang off of the suit are used to tie and weave in additional natural vegetation from the surrounding area to "customize" the suit to wherever it is being used. The strips, when lying down or standing upright, help to blend the edges or outline of the familiar human body away. The suit has its greatest diversity when many different colors are used. However, the colors MUST match natural colors in the environment.

The Ghillie Suit aids the sniper in concealment . While a sniper is conducting independent mission he is trained close on a target by STALKING .When not under direct observation from the target approach walking or on his hands and knees. As he nears the target he can then move by medium crawl , low crawl , or sniper low crawl. The sniper approaches only close enough to be sure of his shot . This exploits the snipers ballistic advantage and keeps him at a relative safe distance . During stalking exercises the sniper closes on an observer at a much closer distance must remain undetected as he fires twice under direct observation.

When possible, the sniper team should be attached to a security element (squad/platoon). The security element allows the team to reach its area of operations quicker and safer than the team operating alone. Plus, the security element provides the team a reaction force should the team be detected.
