Does it seem like your computers slowed down a lot since you've bought it ?
Well , Here's a few tips to get it back up to speed

You might want to check your connection speed if on dial-up
Double click the little green monitor looking icons by the time
A 56k should give you about 48,000 bps or around there
Too low a connection speed...call your phone company

Now...lets clean a little

There are 4 folders in your Windows folder that should be cleaned
They are ... cookies ... temp ... temp internet ... and history
I'll show you my preferred method of doing this

Click My computer ... then your c drive ... then windows folder
You'll get a warning to be carefull ... touch only the folders listed
The Temp / Temporary Internet / Cookies and History
Empty the contents of these folders ... not the folders
Upon opening each folder ... select edit at the top ... then select all
This should cause all the objects to highlight blue
Put your mouse pointer on one of the highlighted objects
Right click and select delete ... you will be told if any are not allowed to be deleted

If you get a message that a file can't be deleted
You'll have to highlight them another way
Left click and holding mouse button down
Drawing a box around them will highlight them
You may have to practice this
Once they're highlighted you can delete them

NOW ... if you want to do all that cheating ... use this program
Clean up

BUT...check the folders just to be sure

That's a good first step ... NOW

Lets close some programs that might be in start up ... slowing you down
If you don't regular use these programs ... you can delete them from start up
Click start / programs / start up
Any program on this list can be right clicked and deleted from start up
This will not make you lose the program

Some programs that start may not be in start up

Any icon that sits in the system tray down by the time may slow you down
Right click and exit these icons if they are not being used
This will free up RAM and help your computer run better

Also ... you close programs that hide using ... msconfig ...be careful though
Click start / run and type in msconfig
Uncheck programs you recognize ... some are protected ... don't touch theses
Read this page CAREFULLY to know what to uncheck ... msconfig
 

Your computer also needs routine maintenance ... depending on its use
Heavy users should do these weekly ... less if your not on as much
These maintenance programs can be found by :

Clicking start ... programs ... accessories ... system tools
Look for ... Scan disk ... and ... Defragment
You should do Scan disk first ... then defragment
Win2k and Winxp users right click C:\ ... properties ... tools /check volume for errors

NOTICE: Scan Disk and Defragment will stop unless all programs are closed
Do this by right clicking and select close or exit any icon down by the time
Then ... go to control panel / display icon and set your screen saver to none
Scan disk repairs hard drive errors and defragment helps speed things up

Sometimes Scan disk and Defragment keep stopping ... use this to complete them
EnditALL

A good way to keep things clean and running well are to uninstall unused programs
This will stop any programs that don't display icons from running
It will also free up some space for you

Click start /settings / control panel / then the add / remove icon
You will see a list of programs here...Highlight any program you no longer use
Then click the remove button ... one at a time
Some programs leave a folder that needs to be removed
Click My computer ... then " c" drive ... then program files
Look for a folder with the name of the program you uninstalled
Right click the folder and select delete

I also suggest you do your windows updates every few weeks
Click your start button ... then windows update ...it should be on the list
If not ... open Internet Explorer and look under tools for "windows update"
When the page opens ... let it anylize your computer
Make sure you do all critical updates ... then look at recommended updates
Make sure you do Java (Virtual Machine) and any other updates you might use

After you do all this and still aren't happy...take it here
