Prisoners' Children Seek Mentors Father Facts: Research Notes "Father Absence and Youth Incarceration." Paper presented by Cynthia C. Harper and Sara S. McLanahan. at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association, San Francisco, CA, August 1998. |
Children are the most innocent victims of America's addiction to incarceration. In the U.S., more than 6 million children have parents under correctional supervision (either in prison, jail, on probation or parole, including 2 million children of parents in prison. Twenty-two percent of all minor children with a parent in prison are under five years old.
Over 60% of parents in state prisons report being held over 100 miles away from their last residence. In federal prisons, 43.3% of parents report being held over 500 miles away from their last place of residence, 40.7% report being held over 100 miles away. Visitation is very difficult for many families and parents in prison often are not able to see their children, although all studies show that maintaining the family bonds in prison lowers recidivism.
The experience of incarceration is extremely disruptive for a family and their future. The lifetime risk that children of incarcerated parents will end up in prison has been estimated to be between two and six times the average risk of their peers. America's children deserve better
