Sunday 20th November 2005 Southampton City 1 Brookfield 6
The Southampton Junior A Cup tie between Southampton City and Brookfield turned into a farce as a little change of venue by the home side left City with no changing facilities, showers or toilets prior to the match. After much debate, City were only able to field a team of 10 players who were clearly not focused on the match. A strong Brookfield team raced into a 4-0 half time lead with City making very few in roads towards the opponents goal. City defended better in the second half and were given a lifeline as a defensive blunder gave Ryan Osborne a chance to run clear and slot the ball into an empty net with 20 minutes remaining. However, as City tired, Brookfield fired home two late goals to comfortably win the tie 6 - 1. Subsequently, the Southampton FA have ordered the match to be replayed with adequate facilities to be made available for changing.
Sunday 13th November 2005 Southampton City 4 Ark 1
It was back to league action for City and they secured their third win in a row as an assured second half performance saw off their spirited opponents. The match was an open affair and pretty even until mid way through the first half when the City offside trap was breached and Steve Cox was beaten by a good shot. City equalised moments before half time as Chris Mills fired in a low free kick from 20 yards after an Ark defender was penalised for pushing. Dean Floyd was brought on for the second half as City looked for an improved performance. City took the lead in somewhat fluky circumstances as debutant Andy Walker's right wing cross flew into the top corner. Minutes later, Chris Mills was given too much space and the striker made no mistake from 8 yards. As Ark pushed forward to get back into the match, Chris Mills exploited the gaps at the back to race clear and coolly lob the keeper from 25 yards to cement City with a comfortable 4 - 1 victory.
Sunday 6th November 2005 Southampton City 1 Stamshaw 4
City slipped out of the Hampshire Junior A Cup at the 2nd Round stage losing 4 - 1 to Stamshaw in appalling weather conditions in Portsmouth. City missing several key players made the short trip along the M27 to play at Cosham in driving rain and a strong swirling wind. Stamshaw scored an early goal on 10 minutes when they capitalised on a moments hesitation in the heart of the City defence to head home. Once again, City were indebited to a Chris Mills goal some 5 minutes later to bring them level as he found some space to drive in from 15 yards. The remainder of the first half was pretty even with City defending well against the wind. City were unfortunate to concede a second goal early in the second half as a weak shot took a wicked deflection off of Gary Durkin and span into the corner of the net. City responded well and forced the Stamshaw keeper into 2 or 3 smart saves but they were hit on the break twice late on to give the home side a somewhat flattering 4 - 1 victory.
Sunday 30th October 2005 Southampton City 4 Romsey 1
City put in a lacklustre performance against bottom of the table, Romsey Old Boys at a wet and windy Totton College but were pleased with a 4 - 1 win as Chris Mills superb scoring streak continued with another four goals. City started brightly and Chris Mills netted with a great strike on 10 minutes. However, City failed to capitalise on their early goal and Romsey saw more of the ball and had several good chances to equalise but City escaped due to some poor finishing. City scored a second goal just before half time as justified penalty claims as Ben Cook was crudely brought down were waved away by the referee who award a free kick on the edge of the area. However, Chris Mills struck a low free kick directly into the corner to give City a 2 - 0 half time lead. City were quick out of the blocks in the second half as Mills scored two individual goals in the first 10 minutes of the half to put the match out of Romseys' reach. City seemed content with their lead and sat back a little and allowed Romsey a consolation goal, 15 minutes from time as Dan Foot turned a low cross past a bemused Steve Cox into his own goal. Another early contender for Blunder of the Season no doubt. All in all, City gained another 3 points in a match where they didn't play particularly well but this win takes them to third in the table.
Sunday 16th October 2005 Southampton City 4 Old Mill 3
City substitute Dean Floyd scored a last minute goal to give them a hard earned victory at Blackfield and put a dent in their opponents 100% record. City making just one change from the previous week with Stu Bridle replacing Peter Cron started brightly and they took an early lead as Dan Foot out-jumped his marker to firmly head home James Oliver's free kick from near the corner flag. Old Mill scored an equaliser within 3 minutes with a header as the City defence was caught ball watching a little. The City response was excellent and Chris Mills scored twice in the space of 5 minutes, both times racing clear of the Old Mill defence and finishing superbly, to give City a 3 - 1 lead after just 20 minutes. The match swung from end to end with both sides having chances but it was Old Mill who scored minutes before half time but City went into the break with a 3 - 2 lead. As expected, Old Mill came out strongly in the second half and at times the City goal led a charmed life with the home side twice hitting the crossbar. City looked dangerous on the break but it was no real surprise when Old Mill scored an equaliser with 15 minutes remaining. The home side continued to look strong but City caught them out in the last minute as Chris Mills found Dean Floyd on the edge of the area. He chested the ball down and steadied himself before firing low into the corner to give City the victory. This performance was the perfect answer to last weeks poor showing and with player's coming back from injury City should go on to have a successful season.
Sunday 9th October 2005 Southampton City 2 SPS Millbrook 9
City were brought back down to earth after last weeks cup victory with a heavy defeat to a strong SPS Millbrook team. Things started brightly for City as James Oliver fire home on 2 minutes after a scramble after an early corner. The lead didn't last too long as Steve Cox was well beaten by a 30 yard drive on 25 minutes and then again 2 minutes later as his weak throw out was intercepted. However City responded well and Chris Mill's glut of goals continued as he twisted and turned on the edge of the opponents area and fired an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. City held firm until just before half time but they conceded two goals in quick succession as Ben Cook was off the field receiving treatment for a severe nosebleed to give Millbrook a 4 - 2 half time lead. City were not at the races for the second half and were caught out for pace at the back time and time again as the forwards and midfield failed to hold on the ball for any length of time. SPS Millbrook found the net five times in the second half to run out very comfortable 9 - 2 winners. It was a morning to forgot for City and hopefully it will be quickly put the back of the players minds.
Sunday 2nd October 2005 Southampton City 8 Crookham Street 0
City made the 100 mile round trip to Fleet to play Aldershot Division One Outfit, Crookham Street a worthwhile venture returning from North Hampshire with an impressive 8-0 win in the 1st Round of the Hampshire Sunday Junior A Cup. Chris Mills took his personal total to 13 goals in five matches with a six goal haul. City were one up in 3 minutes as Mills was fouled in the box and he converted the resultant penalty. Mills scored again on 10 minutes and then 9 minutes later he set up Ryan Osborne to chip in for the goal of the match. Mills, in superb form scored two more first half goals to give City a 5-0 halftime lead. It took City just 3 minutes of the second half to score a sixth goal with Mills increasing his tally to five. Rob Thornby then got his first of the season and Chris Mills wrapped up the scoring with his sixth goal of the match converting another penalty after Ben Cook was brought down close to the by line. City tired in the final 15 minutes or so but Crookham Street failed to get on the score sheet due to a combination of poor finishing and a couple of fine Steve Cox saves. All in all, it was an enjoyable trip to Fleet matched by all round excellent performances.
Sunday 25th September 2005 Southampton City 3 Brook 5
City lost out 5 - 3 in an entertaining encounter with Brook at Bishopstoke Rec. City never really recovered from an early injury to full back Gary Durkin and conceding two goals in the first 20 minutes which meant they were always chasing the game. However, the response was spirited and City had halved the deficit by half time with a superb free kick from Chris Mills. Brook started the second half well and regained their two goal lead within two minutes but once again City refused to lie down and Chris Mills scored with a low shot from the edge of the area on the hour mark. Brook piled forward again and scored with 20 minutes remaining to take the score to 4 - 2. City substitute, Ryan Osborne, headed home from a corner with just 4 minutes left on the watch but City were caught out with a sucker punch in the last minute as they pushed forward looking for an equaliser as Brook scored their fifth and final goal.
Sunday 18th September 2005 Southampton City 2 Lapstone 3
City lost their 100% record as they succumbed to a late goal from a corner to lose 3 -2 to Lapstone in a close match. Things started brightly for City with Chris Mills finding space in the Lapstone area to steer the ball home from 16 yards. City's lead lasted to the half hour mark when Lapstone equaliser and the teams went into the break level. Lapstone had the better of the second half and scored with a header from a free kick with 16 minutes to go. Just 5 minutes later Mills showed his strength as he held off his opponent to thrash the ball home. The game seemed all set for a draw but some slack marking from a Lapstone corner, 4 minutes from time, was City's undoing as the visitors netted the winner with a close range header.
Sunday 11th September 2005 Southampton City 5 Romsey Old Boys 2
City went to the top of the early Junior Two league table with a good 5 - 2 victory at Romsey Old Boys. The home side took the lead midway through the first half but Chris Mills levelled before half time after Mike Strickland's terrific drive came back off the bar and Mills calmly slotted home the rebound. City started the second half in a positive mood and were in front within five minutes as Chris Mills scored his second of the match. Romsey Old Boys levelled as a long shot drifted over Steve Cox in the City goal. Mike Strickland then headed in Jamie Oliver's cross for his first City goal. He then netted again with the aid of a deflection five minutes from time. City scored a fifth two minutes from time as Strickland fired low into the corner for his hat-trick which capped a fine performance from the stand in striker. City with three key players missing, continued their good form and maybe this is the season they will win a trophy.
Sunday 4th September 2005 Southampton City 5 Aalco 0
City got the new season off to a flying start with a fine 5 - 0 victory over Aalco at Totton College. Paul Neary in his City debut headed home Jamie Oliver's corner on 12 minutes and Dean Floyds free kick also found the net some 20 minutes later to give City a 2 - 0 half time lead. The match was effectively over 10 minutes into the second half as City scored twice in a three minute spell. Paul Neary headed in again, this time from Ryan Osborne's corner. Then Michael Strickland was fouled in the box to give Dean Floyd the chance for his second goal of the match from the penalty spot which he duly accepted. Chris Mills rounded the match off in the final minutes with a neatly taken goal. The four new signings making their debuts today have certainly strengthened the team with the defence looking much more solid and with Steve Cox having a good game, City achieved a rare clean sheet.
