United States of America: Early Beginnings

Native Americans: the first people of the United States

Did you know that the first known inhabitants of what is now the United States are believed to have arrived over a period of several thousand years? It is believed that these inhabitants began coming to what is now known as the United States 15,000–50,000 years ago by crossing Beringia into Alaska. There is even some evidence of these cultures settling in what would become the United States territory around 14,000 years ago. Today, we know these inhabitants Native Americans.

Europeans: the beginning of the American Journey

It wasn’t until the Europeans arrived that the colonial history of the United States began. Beginning in 1607, Europeans migrated to North America, where they formed colonies along the east coast. These colonies would become the original thirteen U.S. states.

Originally, the thirteen colonies were under British rule. However, due to growing dissatisfaction with the British, the Europeans wanted to break away from England. As a result, war irrupted between those that migrated to the Americas and Britain.

Ultimately, the original thirteen British colonies fought the British army in the American Revolutionary War of the 1770s and issued a Declaration of Independence in 1776.
