The weary Wonder Show was heading south from Kansas through the Oklahoma panhandle late one night. Just south of Liberal, they spotted a sign pointing to Lake Optima campsites. The 2001 Wonder Atlas showed a huge lake with all kinds of camping possibilities. So to the lake they headed. In fact, Lake Optima dried up over 20 years ago, and the fearful Wondershow drove deep into the dark, vacuous Oklahoma wilds, pulling off the roadside to sleep and wait 'til the sun rose and the only gas station within 20 miles opened.
This is how The Travelling Wonder Show came to meet Andy Johnson, owner of Hardesty Oil.
