The U.S. was already on the rise as a major threat to democracy in the early 20th century, by beginning to squelch advocates of democracy and other radical forces prior to the Great Depression. But after the U.S. came out on top with nuclear weapons at the end of the Second World War, there was no turning back; the military-industrial complex that President Eisenhower warned against became the driving force for America. The spirits of peace and love were of no value to the new economy.
Ammon and other old-time radicals were marginally influential in the cultural revolution of the 1960s, as the young people in that era awoke and tried to respond to the new spirit of war-making and world domination that surrounded them. By the end of the 20th century, the U.S. and her companies clearly dominated the planet, and a handful of people cried out against this immoral injustice. There were non-lethal battles in the streets of the U.S. in Seattle, Washington D.C. at Republican & Democratic National Conventions, and on many other fronts in North America.... |
