Doug loved the water, growing up on a surf board and later switching to wind surfers.  Karioitahi Beach doesn't have the most challenging surf, but it was the nearest one to Papakura.  Later, when Doug got into mountain biking the trails in Karioitahi "Forest" offered an easy ride to New Zealand's Evel Knievel.  So it was not surprizing that it was there that Marcia chose to spread Doug's ashes.  On the 9th October 2004 I joined her, Graeme, Viv and Jas on that beach.  Viv read a poem, then apparently Doug didn't want to go as it took a major effort to open the box.
