MISSION
To encourage cultural literacy in the Rio Grande Valley by promoting the arts and to use art to help bring an end to the AIDS epidemic.

NAME
Art That Heals, Inc., represents our focus on art therapy, specifically, as well as the concept that experiencing art is relaxing, enjoyable, and possibly has healing affects, whether in the production of or in the enjoyment of various art forms.

AUDIENCE
Our nonprofit organization would serve the people of the Rio Grande Valley and deep South Texas, namely in Starr, Hidalgo, Cameron, Willacy and Zapata Counties by bringing an appreciation for the arts and cultural awareness into their lives. We will provide opportunities for learning, service and employment to local artists, such as painters, sculptors, potters, dancers, singers, writers, actors, and musicians. We will also serve people living with AIDS, their friends and families, and their caretakers.

GOALS
1. Use art as a creative means to help people living with HIV and AIDS and to honor the memory of people who have died of AIDS.
2. Illustrate the enormity of the cultural literacy gap in the Rio Grande Valley.
3. Introduce the public to local artists of the past and present.
4. Increase public awareness of the need for art in daily life.
5. Raise funds for community-based cultural events.
6. Provide a creative means for self-expression.
7. Assist with art education.

PLANS
We have formed a public-funded, arts-minded nonprofit organization with HIV and AIDS at the forefront of its mission and programs. We have incorporated as a nonprofit corporation in Texas and are in the process of applying as an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

Eventually we plan to house a cultural arts center and to sponsor programs regarding art—such as a display—and other programs dealing only with HIV/AIDS—such as sponsoring a retreat for people with AIDS—as well as other programs combining both issues: whether in the form of a display of photography by HIV-positive individuals or sessions of art therapy for AIDS-affected individuals, for example.
