O.P.P. (Other People's Poetry)

You Down Wit' O.P.P.?
Art That Heals, Inc. is sponsoring O.P.P. (Other People's Poetry) in the spirit of the Favorite Poem Project and National Poetry Month.

O.P.P. (Other People's Poetry) will be held on
Saturday, April 1, 2006
from 7 to 9 p.m.
at The Ristretto coffee shop/restaurant in Edinburg
1102 W. University Dr., Suite B Next to El Pato, across from UT-Pan American

Free Admission (Your Tax-Deductible Donations Art Welcome, But Not Required)

Donations of used books, CDs, and magazines are being accepted. The books, CDs and magazines will be sold on site.

In keeping with the name of the event, the main stipulation for readers is that they not read any original poetry. Readers must choose their favorite poem and will be allowed to read in any language, preferably in English or Spanish, but any language is fine.

Becuase this is a private establishment, we would ask that the language of the poem be respectful of the customers, so that we might be invited back for other events.

Anyone interested in reading, please e-mail the title of your favorite poem and a short note on why you'd like to read it or why that is your favorite poet.

Readers will have 5 minutes to introduce their poem/poet and why they chose it as well as to read it, so please do not choose long poems--or if you do, please read only a special section of it, out of respect to others who want to read.

We don't want to have the same poem read twice and this will be a first come, first served type of thing.

We plan on inviting local celebrities, dignitaries, and teachers to join us for the reading. (If you know one, please invite him or her.) Last year's readers included (this is a partial list only):

Virginia Haynie Gause, librarian at UTPA: "IF" by Rudyard Kipling
Noemi Martinez: TBA
Daniel Garcia Ordaz, features writer at Valley Morning Star Newspaper and author of You Know What I'm Sayin'?: "I Dream A World" by Langston Hughes.
