CATHERINE SMITH (KITTY)
Daughter of John and Elizabeth Smith
Born: 1828c,
Married: Did not marry
Attended the Perth School in 1834.
Following the death of her sister-in-law, Catherine Henrietta in
1855, Kitty most probably raised her nephew, John Handran Smith.
Certainly this nephew was favoured above all others as he was the
sole beneficiary in her Will. All her land holdings were
bequeathed to John Handran Smith.
In March 1868, Catherine donated one Pound to the appeal for the
new building for the Sisters of Mercy in Perth.
Shedding further light on her activities is a report in the
Catholic Record of 14.8.1879:-
CATHOLIC ORPHANAGES BAZAAR
Kitty's death notice appeared in the Catholic Record of Thursday,
April 22, 1880 and read:
SMITH.-On the 25th instant, at her residence, Howick Street,
Perth, Miss CATHERINE SMITH; aged 51 years. Deeply regretted by
her numerous relations and acquaintances. May she rest in peace.
(YES....the date of death is as on her tombstone and the date of
the newspaper is as shown on the masthead of the paper!)
