The Catholic Record published an obituary on 4.9.1897:

THE LATE MISS MARIA SMITH.- Ere this the majority of our readers have heard with regret the death of Miss Maria Smith, of Perth. The deceased, who had attained the ripe age of 67, enjoyed very good health until within a few days of her death. It appears that she caught a slight cold, the effect of which was inflammation(sic) of the bowels which carried her off in two or three days. On Sunday last at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Highgate, the Rev. Father Duff referred to Miss Smith's death in very feeling terms. He said that it was fourteen years ago since he had first met the deceased lady. Since that time he had heard of very many acts of charity that she had performed. He reminded his hearers that when they were erecting the building they were then in, Miss Smith had sent in £15 in her usual unostentatious manner. It could of truth be said that Miss Smith was one of those who always delighted to do good by stealth and blush to find it known. The Rev. gentleman referred in eulogistic terms to the industry and other virtues practised by deceased. He recommended her life as a pattern to those who desired to do right, and wished for a good and happy death. Father Duff also referred to the sad occurrence at seven O'Clock Mass at the Cathedral. We have heard expressions of deep regret from all who knew her. May her soul rest in peace.
