Moi et la belle on avait été au bal.
On a passé dans tous les honky tonks,
On a revenu lendmain matin,
Le jour était après s'casser
J'ai passé dedans la porte d'en arrière.
Après midi, moi j'étais au village
Et j' m'ai soûlé que je pouvais p'us marcher.
Ils mon ramenait back à la maison,
Y avait d'1a compagnie, c'était du monde étranger.
J'ai passé dedans la porte d'en arrière.
Mon vieux père, et quand que j'ai arrivé
Il a essayé de changer mon idée.
J'ai pas écouté, mon, j'avais trop la tête dure.
"Un jour à venir, mon nèg, tu vas 'voir du r'gret.
T'as passé dedans la porte d'en arrière."
J'ai eu un tas d'amis tant que j'avais d' l'argent.
Asteur j'ai p'us d'argent mais ils voulont p'us m'voir
J'ai été dans l'village et moi, je m'ai mis dans le tracas.
La loi m'a ramassé, moi, j'su' parti dans la prison.

The Back Door

My sweetheart and I went to a dance.
We went to all the honkytonks.
We came back the next morning at daybreak.
I went through the back door.
This afternoon I went to town
And got so drunk that I couldn't walk.
They took me back home.
There was some company; they were strangers.
I went through the back door.
When I arrived, my old dad tried to change my ways.
I didn't listen to him; I was too hard-headed.
"Some day, my son, you'll regret,
Having passed through the back door.
I had a lot of friends as long as I had money;
But now I'm broke, they don't want to see me any more.
I went to town and got into trouble.
The law picked me up and we're going to jail
We will go through the back door.
